Bought for energy efficiency, the manual timer and the stainless steel
Several months after first review ...Same great performance: Do clean it regularly to prevent deposits with a vinegar solution (most recently leftover pickle juice and a plastic scrubby). Has automatic shutoff if it runs out of water fortunately. Hard boiled eggs (smaller on mine - 9-10 minutes; larger - 11). This is the 'go to' for anything with hot milk, melted butter (use a small stainless pitcher which gets greasy in a small ceramic dish which doesn't) or hard boiled eggs. I use it occasionally for other things if heating a small amount (recently heated some chicken broth in a mug).I occasionally have to make sure the plug is fully plugged in if it doesn't turn on right away. It gets moved around - always nice to have a designated area. It's now on a power strip so I can let the timer wind down the last few minutes if I'm in a hurry and just want to shut the power off without unplugging it.I want it to last a long time so I try to make sure water from the steam on the cover drains back onto the tray. Have even started buying and using shiny dome covers for other pans/appliances after using this.---Initial review: With steam, you have to be really careful. Lift the lid straight up. I've already used higher containers than those provided and it is possible to spill things (and if you do, they may be quite hot).Use a pot holder/oven glove that protects your whole hand.If you don't like plastic for cooking, the poached egg tray would be a great divider for a drawer.>Five minutes ... a cup of heated milk which didn't burn to a pan on the stove (placed on top of the stainless steel egg insert).>Seven minutes (probably less) ... 2 scrambled eggs ... make sure you oil/grease the stainless steel pan before the eggs ... slide right out ... easy to heat some rolls with the remainder heat if want>Use the tine of a fork versus their poker at the end of their measuring cup for poking the ends of the 'to be hard-boiled' eggs prior to cooking ... seems safer and then you don't have to mess around covering the poker>Mega flexible for various small stainless steel containers, Corelle style cups, silicone cups, and even ceramic (I transfer things to cooler containers for handling) ... remember ... lift the lid straight up and protect your hand from the steam. I put everything on the egg tray.Likely will immediately have hard water deposits (where water gets hot/evaporates) ... clean off and keep clean right away to maintain performance/efficiency. ALWAYS check the water level prior to each use.Instructions: Do not turn timer off. Let it wind down if you want it to last a long time. The manual timer winds down even if it's unplugged so if the timer is still going and you want to turn the unit off, the best option is to unplug it.Have used it several times. Takes a few years to know about durability. Seems to be very well made and I really like the cover design (since you can put taller items in it IF you lift the cover straight up). I also use an Aroma Simply Stainless rice cooker with a steam basket a lot ... had to add a timer to that and the timer I use for that lacks the flexibility of this appliance (15 min., 30 min., etc.)As with all stainless inserts/covers and pans which are not electrical, it's good to wash them before use in hot and soapy water. With this item, it's possible to 'steam clean' it.

FIVE Stars for an EGGcellent Cooker!!!
I chose this Oroton Egg Cooker because it was mostly made of Stainless Steel. Unfortunately the egg poaching tray is plastic but I knew that up front so no star deduction for that. I found a really cute non-stick egg poaching caddy with two cups that fit this egg cooker perfectly and even stores inside when not in use. The "Rabbit Ears" top handle is not as fragile as some reviewers state, but as with anything, care should be used when handling. Because so many people have broken theirs, the manufacturer automatically includes a spare! I love that there is a timer rather than depending on the cooker to DING and ding and ding... when the water is boiled away. This unit will chime AND COMPLETELY SHUT OFF when the timer runs down. YOU set the timer for however many minutes you want to cook your eggs. You fill the provided cup completely full of water to fill the cooking plate, and I add a tiny bit for good measure so that the water is not completely boiled away. This lessens the water spots that will remain on the hot plate. But those stains will easily wipe away with white vinegar. I have not used the piercing pin under the cup yet, as I have an egg piercer that works great. I like "almost" hard boiled eggs so I have found 14 to 15 minutes is a perfect time, whether I'm poaching or boiling with the shell on. I use store bought Extra Large Eggs right out of the Fridge. For Hard Boiled Eggs, always pierce the fat end (the end that is UP right out of the carton) and set the fat end UP while cooking. Place cooked eggs in an ice bath for a few minutes to stop the cooking. Tap the fat end several times against your counter or plate and a few times all around and the shells slide right off! The cooker is attractive enough to store on my counter, which is more convenient because I use it quite often! I considered getting the Dash or some of the other all plastic egg cookers and this one far exceeds the quality of those. It was worth it to me to spend a little extra for Stainless Steel vs all plastic! And also for the Auto Shut Off which apparently is the one downfall of every other Egg Cooker out there. Seems like such a simple thing!! I was so impressed with this Oroton Egg Cooker I ended up buying a second one for my daughter. Five Stars for an EGGcellent Purchase!!

It goes on and off constantly and the seller doesn’t help.
I bought this egg cooker because I didn’t want any plastic when I cook my eggs. I was very satisfied with the product for about one and a half months, but at some point the eggs were often too watery even when I followed the manual to make them hard boiled. I found out that the cooker stops working after it got heated a little bit.I tried to do everything to fix this problem, unplugging and plugging the cords again, using other outlets, connecting power cords harder, etc., but the same problem happened constantly. So I contacted the seller because I didn’t want to write any bad reviews before actually letting the seller know about the issue. The seller was very unhelpful and rude, not being willing to solve the problem. I asked the seller if there’s any warranty for such problems and if so if it can be replaced. The seller seemed to be bothered, simply saying it can be replaced without explaining anything else. When I again asked about the process for the replacement, the “advice” that I got from the seller was to connect the power cords first. I mean, how would it be possible for me to get (watery but) cooked eggs if I didn’t connect the power cords in the first place???? I already explained that the cooker stops working after it got heated up — isn’t it obvious it works at first, which means the power was on, then stops after 2-3 minutes??It was a very disrespectful attitude that the seller showed to a customer, not believing what the customer said and blaming the customer for the product defect. As soon as I received that message from the seller, I immediately decided to just discard the cooker and write a review. If you’re lucky enough to get one without any defects, that’s great. But if it stops working or has any defects, the seller wouldn’t want to help you.
