Creative Acts for Curious People: How to Think, Create, and Lead in Unconventional Ways (Stanford d.school Library)

A bible for creative thinking! Be the first to own it.
The Stanford d.school may now be thought to be the crucible of creativity. Many of Silicon Valley's great ideas grew from seeds germinated in this program. This book is a treasure trove of practical wisdom and practice. Sarah Stein Greenberg has assembled a collection of strategies, games, exercises, mind-melts, and how-to's that can be used not only by designers and software engineers but also elementary school teachers, and retirees. The book itself is a thing of beauty, ingenuity and visual delight. Each of the 80 chapters is a practice, game or idea that is a stand alone.. But the sum total is a philosophy for approaching the creation of anything, including lifestyle changes that we can all benefit from. She does a wonderful thing by giving credit for each chapter to people who may have originated the idea or who became its steward. This reminds us that the creative process is a community activity and that we are all in this together. It's a brilliant gift for anyone. I really love this book.

A well designed book about design
I like everything about this book! It’s just packed with assignments and ideas on nice thick white paper sandwiched between two heavy covers (with flaps that open) and a solid binding. It’s a very well made book! And the illustrations throughout are just lovely. It’s just designed perfectly, I guess as you would expect from the Stanford d.school. I will say that most of the assignments are geared toward professional designers and those working on teams. I do not fall into either of those categories and I still enjoyed it, as I simply find art and design so fascinating. There still were many assignments I was able to implement, either just for fun or as a learning experience as I get further along in my art journey.

Unlock your creativity!
This is a how-to manual, covering a wide variety topics that all fit under the heading of creativity. The activities are grouped in to categories, and could be used one of two ways: as a path to creativity within the category, or by jumping around from one topic to another as suits the needs of the reader. These activities are self-paced, and can be completed individually or in groups, it was authored by the executive director of Stanford's d.school, a program designed to help people find their own creativity. Think of this as a workbook or a manual, and use in whatever way you desire to help you unlock your creative potential.I am providing this review in return for being given a preview copy of the novel by NetGalley.

A treasure trove of delightful inspiration
Besides being gorgeously illustrated and an absolute pleasure to flip through, Creative Acts has so many activities and exercises that, as an educator, I'm excited to start incorporating into my classes. From novel approaches for finding inspiration, to innovative techniques for coming up with ideas, there's so much here that I know can help my students grow their creative confidence. I've only had the book for a couple of weeks, but I think I've already got more bookmarks in it than there are pages.

The manual for problem-solving you didn't know you needed
If you're trying to change, solve, fix, or rethink just about anything and hitting a wall, opening this book to just about any random page would be a good place to start. It used to be that you'd have to get yourself inside the d.school itself to learn these helpful (and fun!) practices for building creative muscle and unlocking new ideas, but this book really is like its own trip to the d.school. For people like me, who don't think of themselves as creative first, this stuff can be a game-changer by making it easy to get out of your own way and tap into abilities and attitudes that you didn't know you have. The narrative that Sarah Stein Greenberg weaves throughout and the awesome illustrations by Michael Hirshon are all just icing on the cake. Just get the book!

There are so many great and doable exercises in this book that I'm using to not only get my team thinking more creatively but to also help us build a more creative culture. Don't let the title dissuade you - everyone is a creative people.
