How are they applied?

I pushed the long rivet through the inside of boot shoe lace hole then on the outside put the d-ring unit on long rivet put on short cap on top of long rivet. Place the whole unit on something hard , like an anvil, and take a hammer and smash the short cap smashing the whole affair together.

Are these clamshell in design? I do leatherwork and am looking for something to mount through a chain link so I need to open/close sides before attach

It can be done but it will be a lot of work. I uese a pair of needle nose pliers to spread them easy enough puting it back together was a little more diffcult deu to the size
