Square D by Schneider Electric HOM2175SB Homeline SurgeBreaker, Surge Protection Device, 25kA, 120/240V, 1-Phase, 3-Wire

I live in an area where there are frequent power line glitches. Not full blackouts that last several seconds to hours, but dips and interruptions just long enough to trigger my UPS devices. These glitches seem to be the most potentially damaging to electronic devices, especially devices having inadequate internal surge protection. I already have a whole-house surge protector in my house distribution panel, and bought this device for my remote workshop that is on a separate power line. Installation is quick and simple as it mounts in any breaker panel position just like a 240 volt circuit breaker, and requires only the white wire to be connected to ground. The green light provides assurance it is operational when the panel door is opened. Whole house surge protection is essential wherever there is power line chaos and expensive electronic equipment is at risk -- highly recommend.

Easy installation

This was an easy install in a older Homeline panel. I just moved some of the top breakers to get it as close to the inbound lines as possible. It does have a smaller 25kA rating which I assume is a limit of the neutral pig wire connection vs the newer style for clamp on neutral which doubles the rating to 50kA but those only work on HOM Plug-on Neutral panels which are newer.

My electrician told me to buy these. First time they were about $105. I had them sent to the wrong location by mistake so I reordered them to my current location and would return the others for credit when I was back at that other location. When I went to reorder, the price had dropped about $30. I needed three so my mistake worked out to my advantage. Product seem to do what it needs to do and since I have not had any surges that I am aware of, the lights on these units are still green indicating they are protecting from surges.

I installed two of these surge suppressors, one in each breaker panel (my house has 300 amp service split into two 150 amp breaker panels). Note that you should position the surge protector in the slots closest to the main breaker for maximum protection, so you probably will have to move whatever is currently there to another position. Mine have been installed for about 3 years, and both continue to work perfectly. In that time, no power surges have damaged any electronic devices in my home in south Florida, which is known for dramatic lightning storms and power surges. It's comforting to know I'm protected.

Seems to work

We had a nearby lightning strike create an electrical surge that fried the control circuits in our HVAC system and standby generator. So, I've installed this surge protection in our electrical panel to prevent that from happening again. Rather inexpensive and very easy to install if you're reasonably handy and comfortable working in your electrical panel.

Easy to install and was an exact replacement of the original.
