Electro-Harmonix Silencer Noise Gate & Effects Loop Pedal

Excellent noise killer !

Day1, so far, loving it!!! I upgraded from a JOYO noise gate (also bought from Amazon). This EHX Silencer is about 2x the cost of the old pedal, but has many more features. I decided to upgrade my gate after going to the AC-DC concert and found myself playing more and more of their They have quite a few tunes with start/stop sequences. While the JOYO has been great, the gate does not kick in fast enough for my noisy Peavey amp on the lead channel. So, I went searching for another gate that I could tune to kick in faster, or one that already had the logic to kick in very fast. I tried a Decimator II at my local GC, and while it was great, for the price I thought I could do better (they were asking like $150+ for those models). So, my choice was between the TC Electronics gate, a Boss NS2, and the EHX Silencer. The EHX was the cheapest, so I figured I would start there. I was not opposed to getting a used Boss, but the problem with used pedals I have found is that you never know why the previous owner sold it, and usually it is because of functional problems. My last gate I bought new, so I was hoping to do the same and get what I wanted for this gate upgrade. I figured if it was not good, Amazon has great returns, so I would just send it back and get the next model up. Well, it looks like I am going to be keeping the EHX. Some things I learned (and I am still learning this pedal): Reduction Knob: This allows how much you want the gate to silence. While set at NOON/12'o'clock, this seems to be about the typical gate reduction. However, all the way up totally shuts down all noise, perhaps this is what some want, but anything past 1 PM seems too much, and when the gate opens, it seems to lose some tone. So, I never go past 1PM. Release Knob: I am going back and forth, but it seems like I should be at the full 7PM setting to shut the gate as fast as possible. I had it turn the other direction, and it still seemed faster than my JOYO, which is a good thing. Threshold Knob: This tell how much is needed to open the gate. What I have noticed is anything above noon makes it hard to fully open the gate. While it will open, the tone is muffled, so I try and not go past 1PM at the MAX setting, so I do not lose any tone. I have yet to try the loop, but I am excited to put my pedal in the loop and tame the noise my Flanger and Phaser make. Overall, for the price, this is another hard-to-beat product. I think anyone who does not like this product, they simply have not put the time in to adjust it to their preferred settings. The TC seems like the same product at 2X the cost? I will update once I have had this for a month. I think have a winner here, and if you are unsure about settings, it will work good with every knob at NOON position.
