Failure to do so could lead to a terrible incident including damage to the firearm and injury or ...
I can't emphasize how important it is to perform a reliable headspace inspection on an old military surplus rifle. Failure to do so could lead to a terrible incident including damage to the firearm and injury or even death to the shooter. Having said that, anyone who owns a rifle chambered for the 7.62x54R cartridge such as a Soviet Mosin Nagant or similar MUST confirm the head space tolerance. This set of gauges will do that. They are very easy to use. Simply insert one of the gauges onto the bolt face making certain to align the notch of the gauge with the bolt extractor, push the bolt forward and gently rotate the bolt to the closed position. As stated in the user instructions that came with the gauge set, if resistance is encountered when using the "NO GO" and/or "FIELD" designated gauges resulting in the bolt not being able to close, then the rifle may be safe to fire. If the bolt closes without resistance on the "NO GO" gauge and especially when using the "FIELD" designated gauge, then the rifle headspace may be in excess of maximum allowable tolerances rendering the rifle unsafe to fire. In all case and especially if you encounter a condition where the bolt closes on the "FIELD" designated gauge, it's highly advisable to have the rifle inspected by a competent gunsmith to determine if it is safe to fire or not. Your health and well being are far more valuable than any old rifle.

Works perfectly
This is all you will need to make sure your Mosin (or any 7.62 x 54rimmed) won't blow up in your face. It comes with your GO, NO GO and FIELD gauges. With the go gauge, the bolt SHOULD close. According to foster products, "The GO gage is essential for checking a newly-reamed chamber in order to ensure a tight, accurate and safe chamber that will accept SAAMI maximum ammo. Although the GO gage is necessary for a gunsmith or armorer, it usually has fewer applications for the collector or surplus firearms purchaser." I don't care to pay a bit more and make sure my Mosin is within tolerances so I got this set either way. With the no go, the bolt should NOT close; just make sure not to FORCE the bolt as you could easily damage the gauge, if it doesn't close it's perfect. If the bolt does close on a no go, then the lax field gauge should be used to test headspace. If the bolt doesn't close on the field gauge, you're set. If the bolt closes, you better not fire the rifle or your face will pay the consequences. Take it to a competent gunsmith and save yourself some trouble.Enjoy!

Works great. Too expensive
Worked as advertised on my 1937 Izhevsk M91/30. Would have got five stars but i think the price they're asking is a bit high for 3 little machined stainless discs. I would deffinitely recommend these style of gauges for anybody concerned with ensuring their decades old World War 2 relic is safe to shoot but doesnt want to deal with removing and possibly damaging the extractor to check headspace. The reviews with low ratings for difficulty of use dont make any sense to me. If a person doesnt have the aptitude to set one of these discs into the bolt face and keep it there by holding the rifle upright while closing/attempting to close the bolt then that person should deffinitely not be doing any type of gunsmithing ! ! ! They are EXTREMELY easy to use and will give you peace of mind in knowing you wont be getting a face full of fire when shooting because of an excessive-headspace-induced case rupture.

Exact to spec and worth the price
Upon receipt, I measured the gauges with my calipers and they were exact to specification. My newly aquired Mosin proved to have good tolerances with these gauges and i feel much safer firing it as a result. I will also purchase my next Mosin with confidence since I will be able to check it before buying. The gauges were easy to use and unlike some others i've seen, you don't need to remove the extractor to use them. They cost more than I would have like to spend for a couple small pieces of metal but in the end the price was comparable to similar products and given the alternatives of not using them at all or paying a smith to do the check, they are worth the price. I feel they have paid for themselves now and I'll be way ahead of the game on a future Mosin purchase and lets face it, at the price of a Mosin, you're probably going to end up owning more than one.

Good buy.
I have a few Mosins that I already know are safe to shoot, after buying these for future use, I used them on my existing rifle to see if it does as claimed and these gauges do work.HOWEVER, I did not notice a difference in how much the bolt closes on a field gauge vs the no-go. (On the field gauge it should close even less) It might just be a manufacturer mistake, but I really just need the go/no-go gauges. Still the most adorable headspace gauge available for the 7.62x54r.

Gauges don't lie and may prevent a dangerous situation
These are an absolute must if you are a Mosin Nagant collector or considering a Mosin for the first time. Mosins were combat experienced under the worst conditions. Even though the gun you may be looking at was Armory refurbished, you have no idea if the one you are looking at really was re-qualified. These simple aspirin sized gauges will tell you instantly if the gun you are looking at is to be considered "safe" to fire. Put them on a key chain and take them to your dealer or to the gun show and qualify your interested rifle on the spot..Using a No Go headspaced rifle is a dangerous thing to contemplate in a 7.62 x 54 R cartridge.

Buy These Gages!!!
Don't shoot that Mosin until you've checked the headspace. That thing can blow up in your face and send hunks of steel through your head!!! Only really NEED the NO-GO gage. For the price, why not have all three. AND, if you aren't REALLY familiar with what you are doing,(do you know how to use a set of micrometers properly?) TAKE THE GUN TO A QUALIFIED GUNSMITH!!! These guns have been run over by tanks, buried in the mud, rebuilt who knows how many times and by WHO? Mine is 87 years old and we use ammo that is 40 or 50 years old that has the same power as a 30-06. Be Careful first. Then have fun. BUY THESE GAGES!! If you have, or are going to get a Mosin, BUY THESE GAGES. NOTE: Pin protrusion is another very important check. CHECK IT.
