Mephisto Men's Match Walking Shoe

These are the very best walking shoes I have ever owned. They are heavier than the cloth mesh waking shoes available, but a little more weight is not an issue for walking. They are very supportive and comfortable. My feet, ankles and legs do not hurt when I wear these shoes. Thay intentionally fit looser than most shoes, which I discovered was an advantage in comfort and heat reduction. I bought a different style Memphisto shoe in the mid 80's, have had them refurbished twice and they are still comfortable and fit well. All of the other walking/running shoes I have purchased since I bought my first pair of Memphisto's have on average lasted about 6 months. Lot of difference in 39 years and six months. I believe the Match shoes will be just as serviceable. These are simply a great shoe for walking or standing all day. Well worth carrying a little extra weight to achieve the comfort and serviceability of these shoes. I strongly recommend you try them for awhile so you can smile like I smile. This is not a commercial. I am simply tired of expensive mesh shoes that do not hold up and offer nowhere near the comfort. If you are a runner, these shoes are not for you, unless you are simply looking for a comfortable day to day shoe for work of just ambling around. One last thing. I wear a size 11 shoe, but ordered these in a 10.5 and they are perfect. They also come in wide sizes, but are already a little wide. Once you lock onto "your size" you'll be hooked.

This is my third pair of Mephisto shoes - the second pair of Match. I have a dark brown vintage leather Match and a tumbled black leather Match. Without a doubt, for me, the Match is the best walking shoe on the market. I have read some of the reviews commenting on the insoles, the workmanship, the materials, and the cost. I have also tried several other brands and models. Simply stated, the Mephisto Match is well worth the investment. I live in New York City and walk quite a bit and had been searching for a shoe that has a comfortable foot bed, a durable outsole, a sensible utilitarian design, and sufficient support to minimize joint and back discomfort. While there are plenty of manufacturers that offer great products, no one brand is best for every size and shape foot or person or physique. The bottom line for me is that I HIGHLY recommend the Mephisto Match to anyone who simply wants to be comfortable day in and day out.

Updated Review: After wearing these shows (and more dress shoes from Mephisto), I have warmed up to these shoes and the brand. Very much so, in fact. These particular shoes are extremely comfortable, and LONG lasting. I have walked hundreds of hours in these shoes and the soles haven't even starting showing any wear. This company makes really good shoes. Sizes do run half a size bigger, so plan accordingly. My initial frustration was related to size, but I would highly recommend these shoes to anyone. Very high quality shoes. Sloppy shoes. The whole construction is sloppy. 1) The reason people think these shoes are more comfortable than normal shoes is because the sole is too soft. But that also reduces the support to the food. Secondly, it increases the amount of movement of materials around the foot. 2) In addition to that, the insole has perforations. That increases friction of the insole with the base of the foot. 3) On top of these two flaws, the shoe is sized weird. If 11 is not 11, then why are you marking it 11?

I ordered these shoes with more than a little bit of pocketbook apprehension, wondering why they could be so much better than my Postal New Balances (like five times better?) So I closed my eyes and pushed the button, hoping that my judgment was good. Here is what happened. First, the shoes arrived from Shoemania in about 24 hours. I didn't expect that, though I was obviously pleased. Second, the fit was good, though obviously a little stiff. My foot is a little narrower than average (around a B) so medium widths don't always do it for me. Here, with medium cushion socks the shoe cinched down fine with very little pucker or inside fold. In about a week of wearing them every other day they were feeling quite comfortable. Then today, about two weeks after they arrived, I went to put them on and, snap, one shoelace broke. Aaargh! I was able to use the longer end to lace it up so I could make a special trip to the variety store for a new set of laces ($2.00). I replaced both of the shoes' laces and found that the other original lace was also about to break. It was, needless to say, irritating to pay some $300 for a shoe with such crappy laces. They seemed to be made of a soft cotton, which I would guess would be inappropriate for shoes which have metal loops for most of the laces and thus abrade more readily. I guess the answer is, if you buy these shoes for their comfort and durability, do spend a couple of bucks more and get yourself some strong, synthetic-reinforced, laces (30 inch length did it for me) so they will be ready in waiting when (not if) the original lace(s) break.

these mephistos are light & comfortable. they are casual, yet could even be worn for dress up. they are sturdy like a hiking boot, but are more like a high class sneaker. they are well worth the money & can be resoled at mephisto.com they wear like iron, yet have the most secure, supportive fit. they are truly the cadillac of shoes, once you wear them, thats all you will want to wear. i own 9 pairs of mephistos, (of which 7 are the match) so i added this pair of birch nubuck suede to my collection. also a year round shoe,cool in summer, warm in winter. simply the best!
