Q: I have a white build up on my coffee maker, will these filters stop it

No, it won't. The white stuff on your coffee maker is caused by the calcium material in your water. We recommend you to purchase iSpring RCC7 Reverse Osmosis System to pure your drinking water as the Reverse Osmosis Membrane can remove up to 99% of most contaminants including Arsenic, Nitrates, Radium, Chromium, Fluoride and dissolved solids such as sodium, calcium, iron, magnesium, copper.etc. The WGB21B provide you the basic water filtration because it can remove up to 95% of VOCs, sediment, chlorine, and other contaminants that cause foul tastes and odors

Q: is flow left to right, right to left, or can it go either way?

Right to left. My system set up required left to right. As all the other answers correctly state, it's switchable and ez to do. Unscrew the 8 bolts, flip things around, voila. Done. My system is working perfectly and now flows left to right.

Q: How does this unit flow 15 gpm when the replacement filter states that it has a max flow of 3gpm?

Q: upstream or downstream of the water softener...seeing people do both?

You need a 50 micron spin down sediment filter plus 30-25 micron cartridge pleated sediment filter then water softener if used and then this set after softener. This will reduce filter replacement and prolong lifespan of water softener. You will save more money in the long run.
