Before this, I had purchased the Behringer U-Phoria UM2, which I was admittedly able to get at 22% below the retail cost on Amazon.Upon receiving it, I was a bit disappointed with the build quality of the UM2 as its innards were ensconced in rather flimsy plastic, but what was to be expected for the price? I was willing to overlook that quirk, provided that the interface could work well enough for my needs. But when I actually tried it with my Rode NT1A, let's just say that I wasn't entirely impressed with the results.The UM2 sounded okay, but it was a bit noisier than what I was accustomed to (my other interface is a well-worn PreSonus Audiobox USB). Although I was on a budget, the lower price of the UM2 would have come at a cost of making recordings that wouldn't have been satisfactory to clients. I certainly wasn't pleased with it, that's for sure. What's the point at saving a buck, then?I went ahead and initiated a return of the UM2 and I decided to spend a little extra on the Tascam US-1x2HR.First, my decision to go with Tascam is because it's Teac. Now, some of what Teac has churned out recently hasn't been top notch, but they've also turned out some decent stuff, too. And, of course, Tascam is their professional line of audio gear. I've used Teac and Tascam stuff before, including their vintage equipment. There's also Teac's Esoteric line of high end hi-fi, but that's another story.Back to the interface: the difference between the UM2 and the US-1x2HR is night and day.The Tascam is heavier, with a durable metal construction not unlike my old PreSonus AudioBox.The Tascam was literally plug-and-play on my Mac computers, one running macOS Monterey and one running macOS Mojave. A driver installation is required for using this interface on a Windows PC, but that's no big deal. You can download the required driver from the support section of Tascam's website and install it on Windows prior to connecting the interface to the system.In terms of sound quality, the Tascam is far quieter with better dynamics, indicative of a superior preamp circuitry compared to the UM2.And, of course, the ability to work with a sample rate as high as 192 kHz is a plus whereas the UM2 is limited to a maximum of 48 kHz. The Tascam can also resolve level at up to 24-bit resolution whereas the UM2 is limited to 16-bit.To be fair, 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz at 16-bit wordlength provides more than adequate frequency response and dynamic range for vocal work. But having the ability to work with higher sample rates and wordlengths makes the Tascam that much more versatile for recording all sorts of sounds compared to the Behringer.Are there better interfaces than the Tascam for the price? Perhaps. But as I'm pleased with my test of the Tascam, I'm going to give this a whirl when recording VO gigs.
