Fantastic IF you already have some knowledge of the Chinese language
Fantastic IF you already have some knowledge of the Chinese language. I don't think the tones of the language can adequately be learned from any book, but if you have a solid grasp of the pronunciation of the tones, this book offers great basic vocabulary practice. The downloadable material is also excellent for practicing vocabulary, but it won't replace proper instruction in understanding the tones of the language--which are of utmost importance when learning Chinese!

Easy Chinese
Wonderful series. Easy learning exercises. I own almost every language offered.

Useless at Best
As a former Chinese language teacher, I am deeply disturbed by the ineffectiveness of this book for language learning purposes. It pretends to be beginner-friendly, but in reality, its content is poorly structured and offers little value for learning.

Not sure who is writing these 50 cent reviews, but this book over-relies on Americans learning Chinese by mispronouncing Chinese pinyin. Just from my early experience, I really need to hear the word spoken because the Pinyin letters just don't do justice to the actual spoken word, especially, especially at the beginning there is no replacement for hearing a good clear voice say the word. The download is just some exercises and not related to the text. I would not buy this book. the idea of relying on the English phonetically spelled Pinyin, as this book does makes my eyes role. Can't imagine the result. Hard to face fact is that if you can't go to china to learn or have a really good friend to teach you, you have to be really careful learning Chinese. Just my 2 cents.
