Information about ASCIANZ by NPC Compression Travel Flight Socks If you are travelling by air and in a commercial aircraft, you will be within a pressurised cabin, with variants based on journey times [short haul/long haul] and seating arrangements [leg room] - which differ from airline to airline and the class you have booked. Long periods of inactivity, combined with cramped conditions and dehydration, all combine to increase the risk factors associated with air travel, particularly long haul flights. It is not unusual for passengers to take off their footwear on a flight, particularly long-haul flights and for the duration of the flight. Whether 12 or 60 years of age, it is likely you'd struggle to put the same pair of shoes on due to leg swelling as a result of fluid build-up. DVT occurs when blood flows too slowly through the veins. The blood forms a clot that blocks up deep veins, usually in the legs. DVT doesn't usually have any immediate symptoms, making it difficult to spot. However, typical signs include a swollen or painful calf or thigh, paleness and increased heat around the affected area. Compression Socks are typically described as 'Flight Socks' yet circulatory problems such as DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) and leg swelling (Oedema), can also occur when you spend any time inactive, for example on a car or coach journey and indeed, when static for long periods at an office desk. If left untreated, people with DVT are at risk of developing a pulmonary embolism, when part of the blood clot breaks away and travels to the lung, which can be fatal.
