Christmas Songs for 5-String Banjo

Purchased this book after a student brought it into lessons. Turned out to be an excellent book for all skill levels! Very, very please! 47-year banjo playing veteran endorsement!

I'm a relatively new banjo player who wanted some Christmas songs to play during the season. This book gave me a good range of options with a variety of skill levels for each song. That's right, there are mutliple versions for each song. I'm still on the easy ones, but I can use this book again next year and play the intermediate or advanced arrangements. This is THE book to get for a novice plucker wanting to play something festive.

This book of 20 common Christmas songs is organized so that each selection gives the basic melody, then followed by one or often two variations of increasing difficulty, all written in tablature. Anyone tackling this book should already have some basic knowledge of fingerpicking because unfortunately Davis rarely indicates which finger to use, either for the right or left hand. The basic melody for each song is usually easy, but sometimes will have your fingers dashing into the upper frets or include hammer-ons and pull-offs. If you're ready for a challenge, then go for it. Note too that the choices of songs are the classic kind, written in the 19th century or earlier. So don't expect to find tablature for Rudolph or Frosty the Snowman. Too bad. They would probably sound as good on a banjo as Silent Night.

I bought this because the songs were in the same key as my guitar book. There are multiple versions of each song, from simple melodies to more advanced versions. A lot of them are played high up the neck, and are a little to complicated for beginners and even intermediate players.

Excellent arrangements and well put together. I'm primarily a classical/fingerstyle guitarist but I'm loving playing this stuff!

Great book for Christmas time!

Many popular traditional Christmas carols included. There are various versions of same song, so something for a beginner AND an intermediate player. An electronic link is available to let you download the songs to hear how they should sound(and play along with). I found this handy on the songs written in triplet style, something I am not really familiar with playing on banjo. Note - these are carols, not modern Christmas songs. You won't find Frosty, Rudolph or the Little Drummer Boy hanging around.
