Beautiful
This book is beautifully illustrated and the instructions are clear, even for a beginner. I have 3 of her books now and I feel like I can make a beautiful embroidery now.

Wonderful book on Color!
I am not a hand-embroiderer; I run a commercial embroidery machine. I'm also not a painter or fine-artist. So color choice is always a struggle. I've read plenty of books on color theory; they're gathering dust on the shelves. But Trish Burr has designed the book with an ingenious strategy. She has grouped harmonious color combinations and given them names evoking movie titles such as The Tudors, It's Complicated, Young Victoria... Somehow, this begins to make sense of color choices by seeing the larger picture. So, it's not just all the shades of red or green, but the particular shades of red for a poppy, with the shades of green for leaves. Her embroidered examples of flowers and birds are stunning. But it's her approach that impresses me. She's easy to understand and avoids technical language so it's actually fun to explore color theory. It's a lovely book.

not what I thought...how great!
I thought this was going to be yet another book trying to teach me the color wheel and various analogous or split-complementary harmonies. How wonderful that it's not!The first few chapters are basics of Trish Burr, fabric, needles, shading, etc. Then the rest of the first half of the book is full color lists of DMC thread colors that go together..with DMC numbers. Page after pager of colors that combine. No color wheels! no harmonies! For some, she stitched a flower with each petal showing various colors shaded and/or combined (with DMC numbers given). You want an antique effect, turn to the antique page and there are stitched color combinations to chose from. Not sure what colors you want, leaf through the full color pages until you find a combination that calls to you.The second half of the book is projects. I do have a small issue with Ms. Burr's projects, both in this book and in Needle Painting. I have found numerous projects that tell you to stitch every flower petal in A, B, C, D order. Yet the stitched example by Ms. Burr is not in that order, she mixes up the colors on her pieces, while the project directions clearly have you do each petal the same. Only after my first project clearly was not looking like her's, did I see how she tells you to do one thing, while doing another. I don't do a lot of other peoples art, so while I find it odd that she'd do this, and question why, it's not a big deal to me.Another thing I love is that the book is much bigger than I thought. I expected something the size of Needle Painting. This is big. In full color. With wonderful paper that I find myself gliding my hands over. Wonderful.

There is no better book on colour in embroidery available!
This book is one of the best embroidery books I have purchased, bar none! The information, the examples for us to use in our own embroidery designs, and the fabulous projects, diagrams and step-by-step instruction photos for each one stupendous. Trisha Burr is one of the best needlework tutors in the world, and as I am Australian too, I feel so proud to think that Australia has produced such an amazing teacher. Her own designs and stitching must be the envy of every needleworker interested in needlepainting in particular, but the information on how to use colour to our best advantage in our own work is simply wonderful. It has certainly opened my eyes up to the complexity of combining colours to make our embroidery truly come to life, and I can't wait to try it for myself, although I doubt if I'd ever be able to produce work as beautiful and realistic as Trisha's. I recommend this to anyone who is serious about producing the best embroidery projects they can, and with all this extra information, I believe almost anyone can. The book arrived with two other books in a sturdy cardboard box, and in very good time. Definitely recommended.

A wonderful book
This is a book that fills a gap in the market . Several designs , from easy flowers and birds to more complicated flowers , birds and even portraits , with all the numbers of the colors you need to start your embroidery . On top of that , you see how the expert chooses colors , all easily explained . This is a good follow-up book to ' needle painting embroidery '' fresh ideas for beginners' or a stand -alone book for non-beginners or even experts in needle painting .It gives exactly what it says : no more heartbreak because I chose the wrong colors in the shop and end up with a work I suspect could be so much better . One needs to take some time with this book , to carefully examine the projects and apply the rules to your own work , drawings or photo . It is a bit of work , but how much time don't we spend on the work itself ? If you do that , a new world opens up , even for those who think they have no colors sense !

Professional artwork
I think this book is better described as art. Trish Burr is an artist and it is her keen eye in art which makes her embroidery stand out. However, she is generous to share her knowledge with this book. For example, many leaves may have three or four colours. Trish uses nine. That is how intricate her work is. I can't wait to get started. Everything is explained but you must know how to do at least the basics.Unlike other reviewers' books, mine did not have pattern copies to iron on. They are not missing. They were never included and Trish tells you how to copy the designs in the book.
