Brilliant Corners

I had read that this was one of Monk's Greatest accomplishments. So out of curiousity, I decided to purchase it. I'm not sure if it's the best I've heard from Monk but it is good. If you are a Thelonious Monk fan, you won't be disappointed.

This is truly the best(if not one of the best), Monk recordings. Ernie Henry on alto sax , on a few cuts, is simply incredible . Until this record, I had never heard of Ernie Henry. He has a few CDs. I plan to buy all of them. Every one else on this CD is also great, especially Monk and Sonny Rollins This recording is a must have. Jeff from NYC

モンクの名作「ブリリアント・コーナーズ」で火事場のバカ力を発揮したアーニー・ヘンリーは、このセッションの一年後、ヘロインの過剰摂取によって夭折した。そこで「アーニー、君をもっと聞きたかったよ」と書いたのだが、探すとすぐに別テイクが見つかった。Keepnews collectionにもPannonicaの別テイクは収録されているのだが、こちらのPoll Winners盤はさらに3曲のボーナス・トラックが収録されている。今更Keepnews collectionを買い直すのも面倒だ。ボーナス・トラックの正体も見てやろう。このCDは「ブリリアント・コーナーズ」のオリジナル全5曲を収録し、それに6. Pannonica(alt. take)が続く。イントロのモンクのチェレスタから少し違う。この明らかな別テイク感。期待を持たせるが、残念なことにこのテイクは完奏されないのだ。アルバムに収録されたマスター・テイクが（8:52）であるのに対して、別テイクはわずか(2:34)しかない。別テイクというよりはリハーサルのようなものだ。イヤ～な予感もするが、追加された3曲のボーナス・トラックも検討しよう。7. I want to be happy, 8. The way you look tonight, 9. More than you knowの3曲だ。ボーナス・トラックの3曲は「ブリリアント・コーナーズ」のセッションで録音されたものではない。これらの録音は1954年10月25日のセッションで録音されたものであり、7.と8.はThelonious Monk & Sonny Rollins (prestige)に発表され、9.はSonny Rollins “Moving out”(Prestige)で発表されたものだ。しかもこれらの録音は別テイクでさえなく、ただ既存のCDからコピーしただけのものだ。RiversideのアルバムにPrestigeの録音をコピーして追加してしまうというアナーキーな編集だが、著作権も切れてやりたい放題なのだろう。モンクとロリンズの共演を集大成するという意図は理解できるが、それならBrilliant Corners ＋３ではなくComplete Monk & Rollins Sessionsとして発売すべきだろう。Brilliant Corners という名作に無関係な録音を加えただけではBrilliant Corners に対する冒瀆と看做されるだけだろう。オリジナル盤に対する冒瀆を許さないためにも、「ボーナス・トラックがたくさん入っている！」という貧乏性を捨て、オリジナルに拘って聴くように努めようと思う。

Sonido muy bueno en todo caso.Es Brilliant Corners uno de los álbumes cumbre del Bebop. Se observa en Monk mucha vitalidad y frescura. Hay audacia, espíritu de aventura. Mágico. Los músicos de las sesiones incluian a Max Roach (percusión), Sonny Rollins (saxo tenor), Oscar Pettiford (bajo), y Ernie Henry (saxo alto).Ninguna colección de jazz serio debe estar sin Brilliant Corners.A este precio los dos discos, imprescindible.Algunos datos de archivo:Brilliant Corners fue el álbum más aclamado por la crítica en 1957.En 2003, Brilliant Corners fue una de las cincuenta grabaciones elegidas por la Biblioteca del Congreso de los EE UU. Debido a su importancia histórica el álbum fue incluido en el Grammy Hall of Fame en 1999.

Questa edizione economica della Notnow, dall'ottimo rapporto qualità-prezzo (pagato circa 6 euro), include due album molto interessanti.Brilliant Corners del 1956, considerato il disco più importante dell'artista, ospita musicisti celebri del panorama jazz dell'epoca, come il saxofonista Sonny Rollins ed il batterista Max Roach. Tra i brani che ho preferito, la titletrack dell'album e "Pannonica".Il secondo disco "Thelonious Himself", del 1957, contiene un brano in cui suona il grande John Coltrane, mentre negli altri sette c'e solo il pianoforte.La confezione è buona, il libretto contiene alcune note sull'artista.La qualità audio di registrazione è abbastanza buona.Se la recensione ti è stata utile, ti chiedo gentilmente di segnalarlo premendo il pulsante apposito "Sì" (dopo aver fatto il login). I disliked the fact that the frozen CD, when shattered using a hammer, did not dissolve in my G&T.

This two cd set shows the best of Thelonius Monk. Disc 1 has Monk playing with Ernie Terry,Sonny Rollins,Oscar Pettiford, Max Roach, Clark Terry and Paul Chambers. On the second cd Monk is on his own except for the last track where he is joined by John Coltrane and Wilbur Ware on bass. This set shows Monk at his best along with other legends of that era. Just Brilliant.
