What are the dimensions of the exterior pockets?

There are eight exterior pockets. The three front and three back pockets measure roughly 3.5" wide (side to side), 4.25" tall (top to bottom), and 3/4" deep (front to back). The two end pockets (left and right sides of the tote) measure roughly 5" wide, 4.25" tall, and 3/4" deep. The deepness of a pocket will extend a bit further if you have a narrower item that doesn't use the entire width. For the main portion of the tote itself, the inside dimensions are approximately 13" wide (side to side), 5" deep (front to back), and 7.5" tall (top to bottom).

Are the outside pockets large enough to hold a spray can or bottle?

Not really - the side pockets are for pencils/pens, small note pads. End pockets are larger and may hold a small bottle

Can anyone tell me apx how far the handles extend past top of tote?

They extend approximately 5 inches above the top of the tote.

How many side pockets does it have?

8 total (3 along each long end, plus one on each short side)
