This RTL-SDR bundle has been a great little setup to play around with. I liked that it came with the radio and antennas together, so I could get started without having to piece everything out separately. Setup was straightforward once the software was installed, and it has been stable for me while scanning around and testing different frequencies. The antennas are useful for experimenting, and the SMA connection feels secure when swapping things around. It has been a fun, reliable kit and exactly the kind of thing I hoped it would be.

8/22/2026 I found that the radio is working without a problem and running much cooler after tossing the USB cable and directly connecting it to the Raspberry Pi 4. Further, without moving the antenna, my reception range has noticeably improved and I'm seeing a lot more planes, especially the smaller ones that frequent the area. At this point, I'm satisfied that I've got things set up about as best as I can hope without drilling holes into the wall of my house, so unless something changes, I'm upping this review to 5 stars and likely won't provide any more updates. 8/19/2026 I grew frustrated with the unit and eliminated the 3 foot USB cable, that came with it in the box, and plugged the SDR directly into the Pi 4B. I am now receiving signals from farther way and the SDR is running much cooler. 8/17/2026 Heat is absolutely an issue. I'm in FL and the radio is in a room that is not properly air conditioined. I've been forced to add more heat sinks and an external fan to keep it running cool enough to stay online. I may end up getting one of those $10 bithermal chips to force the issue. Unfortunately I can't relocate the radio to a better environment because the antenna needs height and open space. 8/16/2026 First, let me start out by saying that I have not found anything that I would say competes with this software controlled radio. It's flexible, easy to use, has broad support, and falls my important "under $75" range. It's been working for me for over a week as an ADS receiver (flight tracking) and, for the most part, it's doing a fantastic job. However, after the first 3 days of full-time use, it began dropping offline 16 to 28 hours because the receiver was overheating and dropping the connection. That surprised me because it was not hot, and at best I'd call it "moderately warm to the touch". I added 8 heat sinks that were destined for some soon-to-arrive Raspberry Pis which keeps it barely warm to the touch. After that, it's been working flawlessly. I may add a few more heat sinks just because I'm overly cautious. I'll add to this review in a few weeks.

I bought this module for my daughter's school project without knowing much about it. After finishing the project, I kept it for myself and it's really fun to use. It's allowed me to learn a lot about radio reception. It works perfectly, zero problems, very easy to use. 100% recommended.

When I bought this little SDR, I was a bit discouraged by how it took extra work to get it to function on windows. It eventually did and performed well... for a while (both in windows and linux). It had success working with SDR#, HDSDR, GQRX, and I suspect it would have worked with any SDR software. Well, I used it successfully yesterday and had no mishaps storing it as usual, however, today it does not work at all. It didn't last 6 months (more like a week of actual use). I seldom used it until the last two months when I began to learn how much more I could do with a SDR. I have no explanation nor advice on how to avoid this- it just quit working. I have tried (un/re)installing (yes, I know about Zadig). No changes were made to the system it was used on yesterday. It was powered off, then powered on today and it doesn't work anymore. This is NOT an installation or user issue. I have tried it on multiple ports and more than one system, windows, linux, nothing. Before this, I definitely would have given it 5 stars. This makes me a sad panda. Now I get to play the warranty game. I am extremely grateful for the 2-year warranty... now, how to go about starting that? **UPDATE** I spoke with the NooElec support team at: [email protected] I must admit to being a bit surprised. Their response was incredibly fast. In fact, it was almost immediate. It was so late in the night, I didn't bother looking for a response, but it was there, and didn't appear to be a scripted automatic response. Their support was amazing. Even through email, Sarah was quite pleasant and easy to work with. The information I provided seemed uninformative to me, but I gave all the steps I took to troubleshoot, my observations and also the two screenshots I put here (my details were a bit more expansive than what I put here). It was all that was needed to determine what was wrong. In my case, it was not deemed worthy of salvage or further troubleshooting. This is apparently a rare issue as all NooElec stuff is burn-tested for 24 hours. A bad one got through, but that sort of thing inevitably happens to almost everyone's product. I'm not trying to be a commercial, or sound like their PR, lol... just expressing pleasant surprise. A 2 year warranty speaks pretty highly by itself! A replacement is now on the way. Looking forward to it. I wish all warranty support went this easily. If it weren't such an easy process and an experience which also gave me so much confidence in their products, I would have only taken the 1star to a 4star. This went so smoothly and painlessly, it deserves 5 stars. I had been pondering which SDR brand to toy with next after this one broke... but after this warranty support, I will definitely be buying more of these! I am a loyal customer now... and my first one was a dud. If you are shopping for SDRs, get one of these. If it breaks, they'll take care of you.

The bundle comes with a little card with a QR code linking to their website. From there, software and driver installations accomplished as directed. There is no specific reference to which application is recommended for the PC side of the process, but some are referenced as compatible, such as SDRSharp and SDR++. Several hours of fiddling with either of those and I have finally been able to get the device to play broadcast FM radio stations. That is the only radio service that is discernable. All other bands come across as nothing more than a digital sound similar to FT8 regardless of whether selecting WFM, NFM, AM, USB, LSB, DSB, CW, RAW. Nothing actually is working except common broadcast FM radio stations. There is virtually zero documentation on how to set up, configure or use SDR++ with this. SDRSharp does not recognize it at all. Overall, I am quite disappointed with this purchase and will be looking elsewhere.

Pros: Nice small case, works fine when it works. Cons: Slightly worse reception than the RTL-SDRv3, Intermittent usb disconnects. Just wiggling this makes the device reboot. I have to set it Just So for it to work, but even the skigvhest bump and it stops working. Not worth the trouble. Idk if they skimped on the usb connector, poorly soldered it, or what. It doesn't wiggle. I have only used it indoors at my desk. Never had a full size usb connection go so flakey. Can't reccommend this when the rtl-sdr is better in pretty much every way and cheaper.

I use the RTL-SDR with home assistant to monitor the radio signal from my kerosene tank level sensor and also use it with an old British Gas electricity meter clamp to measure the house electricity consumption. It took a bit of figuring out but works flawlessly now using RTL_433 in home assistant. The RTL-SDR I a great little piece of kit and you can use it to receive all sorts of radio signals. If you use RTL_433 discovery in home assistant you will no doubt see all sorts of radio signals around you, including the tyre pressure monitors of cars driving past! It is slightly larger in size than a normal usb dongle and comes with a selection of different aerials to use with it. It is well made and sturdy in what I guess is aluminium. I’d recommend this to anyone if they are interested in projects like mine.
