yes - these can be used with gouache. i’m not sure why the first person’s answer stated that these were expensive. real kolinsky sable brushes can range anywhere from $50 to $200 a brush. $20 for this set of three tells me that they are likely fake.

Is the case a faux leather?

It's your lucky day! You have two choices. Either believe it's leather and love this or believe it's Pleather and still love it. Why you might ask? If it's leather you have the joy of believing it's valuable and stylish, but if it's Pleather you have an equally durable case since moisture can't make it rot or fall apart, and only use and age may do so. As an old-school leather crafter, I dearly love this material but know water is its enemy unless you are tooling it. After this, you need to keep it dry or protect it from water as it will mildew or rot. Pleather on the other hand is tougher and more durable over time. Either way, it's a nice case though. If you are looking for a gift item leather might matter to you but Pleather is in truth more practical for this use case. Just my opinion and that's not worth all that much.
