Speed 4k Ultra-HD [Blu-ray] [2021]

One of my favourite films just had to get it on bluray.

This is simply one of the best all round 4k transfers out there of a movie 'shot on film' IMO. It is from a 4k digital intermediate and boy does it show. Detail is fantastic throughout, from palm leaves to the faded tarmac of LA to the facial pores of the sweaty cast. The grain is fine, well resolved and never intrusive. HDR feels natural without being forced and the film further benefits by being primarily set during daylight hours. Sound is 'only' 5.1 but it packs a greater punch than many Atmos tracks. Dialogue is clear and the score compliments the action without overwhelming it. The movie is one of the last practical effects driven action movies. Sure it's dumb fun for the most part but damn if it isn't more enjoyable than the CGI filled rubbish that dominates today's box office. Perfect Friday night movie with mates or your other half.

Two action films blew me away in 1994. One of them was True Lies, the other was Speed. Since True Lies will most likely never see the light of a Bluray laser, we're left with Speed. Popcorn film aspirations aside, it's developed into a classic in the action genre, and I really wish modern action directors would go back to see where they're going horribly wrong with today's films. Everything is filmed and framed properly (little to no shaky-cam nonsense here), the stunts are spectacular (minimal CGI if any) and the excellent score sets the audience's pulse racing with the pace of the film. Absolute textbook stuff for a high-octane action film. I won't rehash the plot - everyone knows it by now. My only quibble would be that given the amount of property damage that ensues during the course of the film, the City of Los Angeles would have been much better off paying the meagre $3m ransom demand to Dennis Hopper. But I guess that would make for an incredibly boring and short film, so it's a good thing they didn't! I have mixed views on this Bluray release. On the one hand the picture is much better than I was expecting, especially for a film of this age. The soundtrack however I was less impressed with, maybe because almost every review hyped it as "reference material". It certainly is crisp and clear, and there are some good directional effects. But it just sounded "thin" on my particular setup - I really had to max out the bass on my amp to coax any sort of response out of it. And as for the LFE channel, it barely gets used (and when it does, it's underwhelming). A little disappointing, but like I said, perhaps it's just my particular sound setup that doesn't like this disc since other reviews can't all be wrong. Overall, should you buy this? Yes, absolutely, even if it's just to experience one of the best action films of the previous century.

This is an Amazing special with deleted scenes I had never see & so much With an amazing director & production team & with 4 great Actors 3 vs Dennis Hopper who is great in this , So good as the Villain in this movie Had so many conversations over is it a action movie & imo it is yes not lots of firefights BUT The tension it cranked up to 11 , the action is from the intro & the beat the i iconic Soundtrack .. from 2 mins in it never stops .. it’s All go in SPEED from things going boom to guns to the great lead supporting actress who I still love in Sandra , this was right after demolition man so she was huge but just after starting but a household name because she is that good an actress & still is today And Jeff B is amazing too as the bomb expert, it doesn’t let up And you won’t be sorry with all the extra content, I’m buying the UHD4K now because of watching this remembering how good it was And everything holds up very little CGI all in camera actions so it looks amazing I 100% recommend this! A thrill ride that you will watch time & time again & not get bored of it!

If your wondering if this film is worth the upgrade from DVD it's a no brainier, is it better than the previous Blu ray release is there even a difference, let me tell you that 100% it is, the 4k transfer was done by Fox before the Disney take over and they have done a great job with the restoration of this 1994 action classic, it has never looked better the picture makes it look like it was shot yesterday and the HDR makes a significant improvement in colours and depth, there is some grain but its not that noticeable if at all and the only thing you could maybe criticize about this 4k is the sound mix is not upgraded to Dolby atmos but sticks with the original HD mix which won the sound mixing oscar back in the day so i guess that is why fox didn't go for the upgrade. so in all this is a 4k that stands out and really does make a big improvement on the old blu ray and dvd releases and for me is up there with the jaws 4k so take a chance you wont regret it.

Great movie, great disc, looks better than the blu-ray for sure.

The BLURAY is excellent quality, mint picture, superb sound, good optional English subtitles. I forgot how good and exciting this film is. Not seen for many a year, it is well worth investing in. The action is virtually non stop and the dialogue crackles with wit and tension. The acting/casting is first rate with all 3 stars making sure their presence felt (and heard) over the loud constant action. Not much more to say really. A first class action thriller ...and Sandra Bullock. Who could ask for more?

Cette remasterisation 4k est très bien menée et la qualité d'image est saisissante. Attention cependant, cet UHD est un import UK.

La calidad de imagen de esta película es buena. Se ve mejor que en Blu Ray y no presenta granulado alguno. Pero tampoco es la mejor restauración en UHD 4k que he visto. Aun así, merece la pena tenerla si eres fan de esta película para disfrutarla con la máxima calidad posible. En las opciones de audio, viene en Español, pero latino, no en Castellano. Hay que verla subtitulada (contiene subtítulos en Español). Sonido DTS HD Master Audio 5.1 (Audio original sin compresión ni pérdidas, con la máxima calidad).
