This well-respected text is designed for the first course in probability and statistics taken by students majoring in Engineering and the Computing Sciences. The prerequisite is one year of calculus. The text offers a balanced presentation of applications and theory. The authors take care to develop the theoretical foundations for the statistical methods presented at a level that is accessible to students with only a calculus background. They explore the practical implications of the formal results to problem-solving so students gain an understanding of the logic behind the techniques as well as practice in using them. The examples, exercises, and applications were chosen specifically for students in engineering and computer science and include opportunities for real data analysis. Review: I like the way this textbook is written - I like the way this textbook is written. Altogether, the word choice/explanations, format, examples, work exercises, etc., make it very readable, which can be rare for a statistics/mathematics text. Review: Alright... - I had to have this book for a STAT class I take. Its an alright book. It gives decent examples and explanations of the concepts. But a lot of the answers in the back of the book are wrong, so be careful!

It's ok
This book has quite poor notation and poor explanation of equations in reference boxes. This makes it hard to just grab equations as reference, you have to spend time looking through the text paragraphs. This book was used in my upper-divisional, undergraduate P&S course and it felt very condescending and over simplified. However, the examples and problems are great for understanding applications. This makes up for the poor text and bad notation giving it an average score.

Solid book. I will keep it forever.
I have been using this book at my job for years. It is a great foundation for many other more complex topics and texts. I can pick it up, read a chapter, and move on.

Not enough explanations
I was able to learn the material from it (I only learn from textbooks cause I hate lecture & videos). However, it sometimes took me a longer than average time to understand what the heck it was saying, then it only provides 1 example. I had an easier time learning Complex Variables and Boundary Value problems which are much harder classes. This class was confusing because this book is unintuitive (still pulled an A tho).

Good price, good shipping time
This book is exactly the book I was looking for, it came in relatively quickly, (and it saved me $260) and I bought this in "new" condition. The stickers on the book even say new, but it's obvious that it's been used before. It's in really good condition, so I have no problem with it, but be a little cautious I guess?

Great way to learn Prob-Stats
This was a surprisingly clear book with a wide variety of sample problems.
