Quality as Expected
This knife was to replace a very, very, very very old camping Buck knife I've had since I was a kid. At a certain point, you just can't keep sharpening some things. And also - my fault - I may have trashed it gridding a bit much after I had to fix some too severe dings in it.Anyway, the main purpose for this knife is general outdoor use; cutting open fertilizer bags, cutting down boxes, general utility. I've found it really useful to have the partial serration. It's good a good balance. It does feel a bit light weight, which is fine. (E.g., compared to a similarly sized Ka-bar it's just not got the same heft.) But it's solid and has performed well for the short time I've had it. I've got the nylon sheath. The kydex wasn't available when I bought mine and that wasn't that important to me. Turns out the nylon with the plastic sheath is just fine. I don't use the little pocket for a stone, but it's there if I wanted it. I like the button snap on the sheath belt loop as this way you don't have to undo your belt just to attach it.My other SOG is the rescue/escape which I use for rescue work and has held up for years, so thought I'd go with SOG on this one. It's a solid choice. The old arguments of serrated vs. not? Mostly pointless here. If you think you need both, there's enough blade size here for both types to deal with different needs.

My experience and suggestions
Excellent ergonomics. Weight & balance feels good. Been using it for general cutting applications while camping and fishing. Slices through flesh, fruit and rope very well. I was slightly disappointed to damage the serrated edge after shaving my magnesium bar for the first time. Based on the knife's reputation, marketing and suggested retail value, I expected the serrated edge to be stronger. Price wise, I feel like this is a $30 knife. I feel like the $70 or so I spent on this was too much.I was storing the knife in its kydex sheath. (I later learned that SOG advises against this) The knife developed small specs of rust on the blade after improper cleaning following a couple salt water fishing trips. I removed rust by soaking the blade in apple-cider vinegar for 24 hours, then lightly scraping the rust spots with an edge of aluminum foil, then rinsing with water. Soaking the knife in the vinegar also removed a random, rectangular-shaped stain that came on the blade. After each use, I now store the knife blade in a cardboard sheath, after 1) thoroughly cleaning with soap and water, 2) thoroughly drying, and 3) oiling with a thin coat of (olive) oil. (As suggested by SOG)My Nylon Sheath got dirty, and the kydex insert got dirty inside as well. I just scrubbed the dirt out of the nylon with my hands while rinsing in water. I rinsed out the insides of the kydex insert as well. Let the entire sheath air dry.I recommend reading the care and maintenance tips on SOG's website before using.

Lives up to the hype.
Having owned this knife for almost one year now, I definitely understand why the SEAL Pup Elite is such a fan favorite.Although there are better knifes out there, the SEAL Pup Elite meets all my requirements for a low maintenance, versatile, tactical knife. The flat edge of the blade came hair shaving sharp from the factory, and the serrated parts were just as keen. Now AUS-8A is not as tough as 1095, for example, however it is fantastic for those who want a strong semi-stainless blade that doesn't require much attention. It gets nice and sharp, holds an edge better than 440C, and you don't have to worry about it rusting...even in salt water thanks to SOG's surprisingly resilient black TiNi finish. I didn't bother trying to baton with my knife, because of the serrations, but I have put a lot of torque on it in various situations and it hasn't shown any signs of failing. The grippy rubber handle is awesome, with a great feel in the hand in both dry and wet conditions. It is also surprisingly tough, it still looks new! It is by far my favorite knife handle. The nylon sheath is well made, it secures the knife well, and the MOLLE attachments make it easy to attach to just about any backpack. The little front pocket is a great spot for a little multi-tool, flashlight, or compact sharpener.Overall, I couldn't be happier. It doesn't replace my bushcraft and batoning knifes, but it is my go-to for all other non-culinary cutting tasks.

Perfect gift for the man in your life
I did a lot of research before deciding on the SOG Pup Elite knife as a birthday gift for my boyfriend, an ex-special forces member. It is the perfect size for him to wear on his thigh rig when he goes outdoors and it has a lot of different uses as a utility knife. It's sturdy, has an excellent reputation on survival and outdoor blogs, and is considered by some the one must-have knife. It was actually funny because a few days before I gave him his gift, he said he really wanted the SOG Pup Elite Knife to add to his collection. It made me feel really proud that I got him exactly what he wanted! :) When I gave it to him he was thrilled! He was impressed with the sharpness of the blade and all the different serrated edges. He said it felt good in his hands (he has big hands) and he was beyond happy! So ladies, if you are looking for a gift for your outdoorsman or ex-military man, this would be a great gift!It does come with a holder which has a place for a small (3 in) sharpening stone. I wish I knew that before hand because I would have added that to his gift, too. I guess I know what I'm getting him for a stocking stuffer for x-mas! :)
