Q: I have a light saber i need to check on a flight. Is this durable enough to check?

The pluses about the product are that it is expandable and light weight. It also has an adjustable carrying strap. I Use two of them. One is used for my conducting batons, and the other one for carrying a flute. However, I've never checked them into a baggage hold on a plane. If I had to do so, I would line them with foam rubber for extra protection.

Q: Does the clear end cap piece screw off or pop off?

The solid color top screws off. The clear plastic cap pops off and allows you to slip a business card or similar under as they often start looking all alike.
