Back plate to battery compartment is covered with a electrically conductive material to complete the circuit. When batteries leak acid, the back plate is ruined. Expensive part to just replace the plastic back plate! However, it is what it is and it works as advertised.

This was exactly what I needed and it's working great!

Works great. It was an easy fix for what my plumber was charging $250. Take out two screws, unplug old unit, plug in new unit and replace screws! That all. Need a special bit for your screwdriver to remove first screw.
