The set itself as sold will operate without that "plug" item - you will be able to operate each car on its own lane of the two lane track so two cars (or players) maximum can compete against each other with the set as it comes and you could expand without the "plug" if you stick with only one car per lane."Digital" is the way to run more than one car at the same time on one lane of the track. If at some time in the future you want to add to allow multiple cars on a lane and change lanes through the digital features, given that the two included cars are as it says "Digital Plug Ready (DPR) cars - cars can be converted for use with our Digital range in under sixty seconds using the C8515 Digital Easy Fit Plug" then you would be able to use them with other digital cars if you add one of these plugs to each of them in addition to buying the other digital cars, controllers, etc.So you don't need them now if only planning to use the set as it comes but if later he loves it and wants to expand and have more friends play using more than two cars on the two lanes then this set is ready to allow that by having the included cars "DPR".

Will this plug in work with a Carrera digital setup?

No only works on Scalextric Digital. Carrera Digital only works on Carrera.

This is for the Saloon style cars that a dummy door in the bottom of the car for the plugs. If there is no dummy door then it won't work and you will need the C7005 or C7006 chips to hardwire a chip in....that requires a little more technical skill to do.

Does anyone know if the recent versions (i.e. 2019) are rev. H ? Rev. H has the separate solder pads for the front and rear lights.

From Hornby: There has been a modification as a running change to the C8515 digital module. This version will have the following amendments, that will affect after-market purchases/modifications only The chip will run the same when used in un-modified Scalextric products. In normal digital mode the light is exactly the same as current digital module. However, there are 4 pads on the new in-car module for front light and rear light control for after-market modifications. This allows the user to rewire the digital chip as follows: The front light is always on; the rear light is half on during running and fully on when the car is still to replicate a real brake light; the new in-car module can support up to 3 amps loading, can be used with most of aftermarket cars such as Slot.it cars. In analog mode, the light functionality is the same as the current in-car module
