can you fill just half of seed in each compartment?

The feeding slots go all the way from top to bottom. When the birds eat half of the seed the top feeding perch will no longer have seeds for the birds to feed until the feeder is refilled. The feeder is filled from the top only.

What feeder is best to not have so many starlings?

To begin with, they are nearly impossible to get rid of altogether, but there are things you can do. As for feeders, I've found that a lot of squirrel-proof feeders will discourage them to some extent, and while they will still use them, they won't stay at them very long. Some of my feeders drop down and cover the feeder ports when any heavy weight lands on the perches, and as a rule the Starlings are larger than a lot of the songbirds, so those types of feeders help somewhat. Others that discourage them are the caged feeders where they have to reach through an outer cage to reach the seed. Again, they'll still use those feeders, but won't stay long; they don't "take over" the feeders like they do others. I just got the Perky-Pet 325SCOMBO-1SR feeder two days ago, so the jury is still out on whether or not they will try to use this one. Starlings and other "bully birds" (Red-Winged Blackbirds, Cow Birds, etc.) tend to prefer easier to use feeders such as platform feeders, and feeders with larger perching areas, so if you have those, the Starlings will keep coming. They also don't like going under anything to reach the feeder, so you could put the feeder under a squirrel baffle that has a domed shape. Again, this will discourage them, but they just grab a bite and leave quickly. Another thing you can do is do an online search for food Starlings won't eat. They have fairly soft beaks and can't open a striped sunflower seed (they will eat black oil sunflower seeds), they also don't care for safflower seeds or thisle (Nyger seed), but I have seen them eat the safflower occasionally. Do yourself a favor and search online, you'll find a lot of helpful information. Some sources say that you can remove your feeders for a few weeks, until they go looking for another food source. I have never done that because I feed my birds year-round and have for over 40 years. I wouldn't want to lose any of the regulars I have, so I do what I can to discourage the bully birds while keeping my songbirds happy. Good luck. This is a universal problem, and I don't think anyone has come up with a sure-fire solution.

Does this bird feeder spill seed out on the ground while birds are eating it? I havd a squrriel proof one now but seed spews from it

Spillage is normal for any bird feeder. If it is excessive however, there could be a problem with the feeder. Please contact us directly if you find there is a fault with the feeder.
