Is there a place to put a mouse on the right side?

You can tilt the main part either way so the flat part is either on the left or right - where you can put your mouse.

Will this fit under my couch. I have 5" of space. Also, I have a 16" computer (width) is it too heavy for this unit. Thanks.

The bottom is only about 2 1/2 inches high, so it should fit under your couch just fine. Also, my son uses his 17" Dell on this cart along with mouse and usually a wallet, drink, and snacks. LOL!! It's VERY sturdy and rolls smoothly... no jerky movements and it has a "lip" on the edge of the tilting part so you can adjust it and the computer won't fall off. It's REALLY nice! The only thing I think they should adjust is the height... it adjusts, but doesn't go as low as I would have made it. It works fine for my son, though. I like it so much, I'm planning on getting one for myself... unless Santa brings me one this year!! LOL!!

Overall width is given, but that includes the nontilting area. What size laptop can the tilting platform hold?

Tilting area width (side-to-side) is 17-1/2". Front-to-back dimension is 14-3/4". Good luck.

Does this swivel independently from the base? If it does not fit under furniture can you still get it over your lap?

It does not swivel - NO..... it fit fine over my furniture just as long as you have atleast a 4 inch clearance to shove the pedestal legs under. As for over the lap... sadly the table surface it is too high (even in the lowest setting). I tried several chairs, recliner and sofa. For some reason when sitting the height of the table surface was not comfortable to rest nor support your wrist unless you like typing on an "old standard typewriter."
