Sony ICD-UX512 2 GB Flash Memory Digital Voice Recorder (Color varies)

I use it to record interviews I do as part of my PhD research. I am impressed with the quality of sound of this device. I have done interviews in loud restaurants, bustling coffee shops and even in my car while I was driving. In all situations the device picked up our voices well and minimized the background sounds sufficiently. I am especially impressed with the battery duration. I have used it for hours on end and the battery is still mostly full! I just plug it into my computer at the end of the day and it charges in almost half an hour. I like the fact that there are no messy cords to deal with, the USB port just slides down when you need it and you can slide it back up when you are done. This is really a great feature!The device is small, light and easy to use as well. There are probably some features I should check out but I just opened it up out of the box and started using it right away.In all, this is a great sound recorder for research purposes!

Although the supplier is not to be blamed, this model was different than the model I wanted to purchase. It seems that the Sony company made two models under the same label, with slightly different packaging but a very significant technical variant. The original model I had prior (picking up this second one from Amazon) came with a sleeve for the recorder and an 8 gig mini SD card. These trinkets were, of course, bonuses but the main difference was in the recording unit itself, which had a radio feature in my former model that the model I purchased form Amazon did not. It was a mild disappointment to receive this item instead of the former but still the item is a quality recorder and I love it very much. I recommend it as a practical and useful device but just want people to be aware of the variant of the products in case they were chasing a recorder with the radio feature.

I really like the speed up/down function when playing. Unlike traditional device, it does not change the tone dramatically. Besides that, the navigation function is also quick and it let me to search my files quickly.However, the start time is too long if I have many files in the micro-sd card. It is inconvenient to wait for it when turning on the device every time.

My wife bought this to be able to record meetings so the review is hers: I am amazed at how well it worked. I was able to pick up all the people in the room. The first meting I recorded, I listened to with an old set of ear buds and the voices were distorted. I was so upset but decided to try the ear buds that came with the recorder and the voices were clear as can be. I downloaded the meeting into my computer and it was perfect. I am amazed how it can pick up a voice in the back of the room and after the first syllable it amplified it so that it was as loud as the person sitting next to the recorder. The person sitting the furthest was about 12 feet away from the recorder. I don't know the range. I used the automatic meeting setting but there are 3 other settings and you can also set it manually. Oh, we also tried all talking at the same time & rustled papers and I could hear all the voices perfectly. I have only had it a week but am VERY impressed. And of course Amazon is the greatest place to buy from. I have bought from them for years and had a remarkably few problems that were handled promptly. Love Amazon and love this product.

First, Amazon ROCKS! Their service and delivery is outstanding.I use this digital voice recorder primarily to record meetings. It is amazing how well the recorder picks up voices from around the room. There is an option to "cut noise" which reduces background noise and provides further clarity. There is a playback option that allows you to slow down or speed up your recordings. This is very beneficial when typing meeting minutes. You can use either the device itself or your PC to playback recordings. You can transfer the recordings to your PC, which allows the option to share with others. The device allows you to create folders so that you can organize your recordings. I have imported recording from CDs onto the device. This has proven to be a good tool as now I can listen to teaching lessons on the go. I have not recorded or imported any music as of yet. The device is Windows 7 capable. It's easy to use and very compact.

Has anyone had problems with this recorder or am I going deaf? It works great with earplugs but if you want to replay what has been recorded out loud for someone or a group of people it is barely audible. Yes, I do have the volume all the way up to 30! What gives? I can't say I am pleased with this recorder for this reason.

This is out of production now, I think, but I have two. I loved the first one; I carry it with me most of the time. As a composer/songwriter I can never predict when a melody will come into my head, and with this little recorder I can sing or whistle it in enough so I can remember it later. Too many times in the past I've thought, oh, yeah, I'll remember that", only to realize that when I got to someplace where I could write it out or record it, it was gone, and too often unretrievable. So this little chap goes in my bag, all the time. Not terribly "hi-fi", but definitely usable. I don't know why they quit this model; I haven't tried the replacement, which might be really good. But also, it seems like too often a company will change something because manufacturing costs were too high, or just that they were letting something "too good" go for too little. These work great-I'll guard the two ferociously.
