" I've gone to many Baptist churches and have been amazed by their marked differences
I've always been puzzled about "what is a Baptist church." I've gone to many Baptist churches and have been amazed by their marked differences. I've known some people who've told me that if you're not a Baptist you're not a Christian. That they're the only true church. This is why I wanted to read this book. The author addresses this by explaining that Baptists churches have been influenced by today's culture instead of the other way around. It talks about their history, their impact on American culture and most importantly about their distinctives. The author lays out how a true Baptist church is a New Testament church. I found this book very helpful and I came away thinking that I too am a Baptist.

A Great Book
This is a great book that will justify the name Baptist for historical identity and distinctives! It would be great for all denominations to read this book. We should not be ashamed of the name Baptist it is a name given to us because of our distinctives!

For Baptists Mainly
The purpose of the book is for a Baptist audience and thats good, but I expected something more of all kinds of views about the church.

The Norman Way
If you want a good laugh pick this book up! There were times I dropped the book and started laughing at how foolish some of the opinions in the book were! The book is written to Baptists, and is written in a ridiculously subjective way. In the section on infant baptism, he does not cite any outside sources, only giving personal opinion as to why he thinks it is an unbiblical perversion. He cites sources everywhere else, why not here. And I'm sorry his opinion matters... why again? Oh, right... because he wrote a book.In why baptists should hold to congregationalism, he says "we would like to see more evidence" but "it is fully supported in my opinion." hahahahaha really?!If you want a book of why Norman thinks Baptists are the best in Norman's opinion, don't buy the book just know This:R. Stanton Norman wants you to be a Baptist. His book is spent in contradicting himself, and writing a sad, subjectively opinionated book on what it means to be baptist. If you want to really learn about the theological convictions of baptists, their roots, and their views on the church LOOK ELSEWHERE.I am ashamed that a teacher would recommend this book in a master's level course.
