Q: Can this sharpen axes

Yes, you _can_ sharpen an axe. You would need to replace the flat head machine screw with a much longer fastener _and_ use the top slot because the edge of the blade is so far from the clamp, thus reducing the angle. The more relevant question is, "Would you recommend to sharpen an axe", and the answer is "No", this is not the most practical solution. As Uncle Jim says, "Get a file"; it will serve you better.

Q: how to clean the fine hone

I clean diamond hones with water; stone hones with Lansky honing oil. Clean your hones often; then they work much better. I added an extra coarse diamond hone to speed things up.

Q: Can I use this on a large Rapala filet knife?

I would believe so. I use mine on my fillet knives and they have blades that about 6 to 7 inches long.

Q: what is the maximum thickness and length of knife?

I have not had any knives in it that were over 3/16” thick. I’ve sharpened several pocket knives and a couple of hunting knives. All worked very well. I mounted the knife holder in my bench vise to hole it steady and it worked great. Sharpened one side, loosened the vise and turned the whole thing over to sharpen the other side.
