Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul

I've heard that some people don't like this diary, for whatever reason. I haven't heard specific reasons. However, this book is a masterpiece. Firstly, it has stellar spiritual advice which echos St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila and the Gospel- in an easily understood format. That means that it's up to the highest standard of the Church as regards teaching about prayer and spiritual progress. Secondly, it contains the message of God's mercy in particular which is literally impossible to understand and get your mind around. It also has a detailed account of the interior dispositions of a canonized Saint, and how they approached life's situation while living perfectly the grace of God. The only thing I would say is that scrupulous souls should understand how many fault St. Faustina talks about that she confesses are imperfections, and these may be confessed. But just be careful to understand that her soul is so pure the merest specks of dust are bothersome. That is the only thing that could go wrong, if you were at the same time ignoring all the bolded words from Jesus which are pure mercy. This book changed my life at 14, and I've read it 3 times cover to cover, comparing with other spiritual classics. This is pertinent to our times, and very worth the read. It's so packed with interesting anecdotes as well that one doesn't feel it's long. I'd recommend for anyone discerning a vocation to religious life, as the motivations of a religious are explicit in their perfect form, as they are in the works of St. Therese. Buy! Read!

I've been praying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy on and off for years, and I've found this prayer to be extremely powerful. That said, the Diary of St. Faustina helped me to appreciate Jesus Christ, love Him better. and learn the history of this chaplet. Because of her personal relationship with Jesus and with God, it helped me to understand my own journey with Christ more clearly. Even though St. Faustina, who was chosen to write about Divine Mercy by Jesus, said she wasn't trained as a writer. But to me, her soulful words are some of the most beautiful and powerful I've ever read. Nearly every passage was filled with gems of wisdom. My highlighter is constantly busy while I read her diary. Within her notebooks, there are even passages that read like prayers. Her book is also helping me with my own personal journey back to Christ. St. Faustina spoke vividly about the trials and tribulations she underwent. I'm not trying to be sadistic, but I liked reading about them, because it taught me a great deal how to manage my own periods of sadness and spiritual struggles. During St. Faustina's darkest periods of suffering, she didn't lose her equilibrium by cultivating silence and her inner peace. She never lost her love or respect for God by blaspheming Him. She used prayer and silence as an effective weapon to disarm all problems. Some critics have said St. Faustina spoke with a childlike simplicity. But, I guess the purest love is expressed in a similar fashion. She was extremely humble always submitting her will to that of God's. One of my favorite pages in her diary was when she wrote down the words "My Will," on one page, then crossed the words out with a huge "X" and on an opposite page, placed on an opposite page how she'd only submit to God's will. St. Faustina was warm, kind and loving. She was like a star, whose love for God and Christ was incredibly pure, unapologetic and unconditional. She's become an example, to me, of what a true Christian and saint should be. I highly recommend this book for any Christian -- whether they are Catholic -- or not.

I first read Saint Faustina's book Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul when she was plain old Sister Faustina, and a rather daunting twentieth-century mystic. The book freaked me out in several places, especially the locutions from Jesus and the visions of the afterlife. I was drawn to the book, but it frightened me, when I had just come back to the Church after a period of atheism. This was the mid-1980's also, when visionaries, mystics and classic Catholic spirituality was on the wane in the United States. Devotional books as intense as Saint Faustina's had given way to more careful, distanced spirituality. So I put the book away. I came back to it several times over the years, and always found much to intrigue, inspire and challenge me. I found it again in a Eucharistic Adoration chapel a few months ago, and bought it for myself after using it to great effect in prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament exposed. At this point, in my sixth decade of life, with classic Catholicism in full bloom wherever I look, I am finding it a wonderful book to deepen my knowledge of and relationship with Christ. I highly recommend it to Christians, especially Catholics, of all ages. When I first picked the book up in the 80's, Eucharistic Adoration was a dream from the past, as were novenas, the rosary, Benediction, and other devotions and practices of my childhood. Today's younger Catholics are fortunate to once again have ready access to all of the traditional and classic modes of prayer and devotion that have nourished the Catholic faithful over the centuries. This book was made for the ages -- and the Divine Mercy is now coming into Its own.

Put your self-love in the last place, so that it does not taint your deeds. Bear with yourself with great patience. Do not neglect interior mortifications. Always justify to yourself the opinions of your superiors and of your confessor. Shun murmurers like a plague. (120) Let all act as they like; you are to act as I want you to. Observe the rule as faithfully as you can. If someone causes you trouble, think what good you can do for the person who caused you to suffer. Do not pour out your feelings. Be silent when you are rebuked. Do not ask everyone’s opinion, but only the opinion of your confessor; be as frank and simple as a child with him. Do not become discouraged by ingratitude. Do not examine with curiosity the roads down which I lead you. When boredom and discouragement beat against your heart, run away from yourself and hide in My heart. Do not fear struggle; courage itself often intimidates temptations, and they dare not attack us. Always fight with the deep conviction that I am with you. Do not be guided by feeling, because it is not always under your control; but all merit lies in the will. Always depend upon your superiors, even in the smallest things. I will not delude you with prospects of peace (121) and consolations; on the contrary, prepare for great battles. Know that you are now on a great stage where all heaven and earth are watching you. This is a highly inspiring book of the pure intimate relationship that this glorious saint had with Jesus Christ, depicting her profound surrender to Him, her selfless sacrifices for Him, and her abiding love for Him, notwithstanding numerous obstacles, trials, temptations, sufferings and crosses. Here are a few samples: "I must never judge anyone, but look at others with leniency and at myself with severity. I must refer everything to God and, in my own eyes, recognize myself for what I am: utter misery and nothingness. In suffering, I must be patient and quiet, knowing that everything passes in time." P. 125 "I am in Him and He in me. As the Bishop [Rospond] was putting the ring on my finger [her marriage to Jesus] , God pervaded my whole being, and since I cannot express that moment, I will be silent about it. My relationship with God, since perpetual vows, has been more intimate than it had ever been before. I sense that I love God and that He loves me. Having once tasted God, my soul could not live without Him. One hour spent at the foot of the altar in the greatest dryness of spirit is dearer to me than a hundred years of worldly pleasures. I prefer to be a lowly drudge in the convent than a queen of the world." Her humility, modesty, and selflessness are truly awesome, especially since she was quite young when she spoke them. Very hard to put down this heartfelt diary.

This book is exceptional in the detail it gives to visions, mandates, and general comportment that Sr. Faustina has. It is easy easy to read and reflect on the contents.

A precious treasure of a book that I will keep by my bedside forever. Easy to read and beautifully written.

PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! BUY THIS BOOK AND DO A TREMENDOUS FAVOUR TO YOURSELF! I feel the Almighty wanted me to read these sacred words and thus I somehow stumbled upon this particular page on Amazon. Do not make judgements by looking at the little number of reviews given. Before buying I was quite sceptical of the same reason. It's true that the work is not well known as Bible despite being direct revelations from Christ! But believe me, what a treasure it is! Probably for this new world, Christ decided to give new words (Of course the very essence will be same as Bible). And for this holy purpose of uplifting the mankind from the burning hell, the world has become, He chose Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska to become the vehicle. All through her life she was receiving direct revelations from Christ and recording them down on the Command of Christ Himself. "My daughter be diligent in writing down every sentence I tell you concerning My mercy, because this is meant for a great number of souls who will profit from it." (entry 1142) St. Maria in these entries notes down day to day events of her life in convent and her conversations with Christ. She notes her sorrows, grieves, confusions, frustations, tears, joy happiness, inspirations and every little details she feels in her heart. She writes them to Christ. Then Christ answers back either directly through words or through some inner feelings and intuitions. So we learn what a private life of a saint is whi is day and night absorbed in her love for Christ. We learn what an emotional rolar-coaster ride is this spiritual journey which at times become dark without a ray of hope and then firm belief on Jesus brings the bright sun of ecstasies. She maintained in total six of such notebooks and all of them are provided in this book. They are in form of diary entries. The entries are not lengthy. They are about a paragraph each, so can be easily read randomly from any page you open. They are such powerful affirmations that reading of a random entry lifts your low morale straight to the sky! At times of despair they act like torch-light showing the path. At times when you are confused in making a choice between head and heart these entries become the sign-board for right direction. The nature of these words from Christ are always healing and uplifting. "I do not want to punish the aching mankind but I desire to heal it." (entry 1588) I personally felt this work is way more helpful that Bible. The entries are straight forward and direct in meaning, unlike the Bibelic verses mixed in stories and mysticism where one have to ponder deeply into the hidden meaning. Even then it's not necessary that you might get it. I have seen old people suffering in those verses and going to Church Father for clarifications. No need of any teacher or interpretor with this book. Here no one stands between youand Christ! No need to be a Christian to read it. Whoever you are, it pushes you on your spiritual path with great force. I am a Hindu and feel very inspired whenever I read it. Thank You Christ for such kindness. Thank You St. Maria for being the 'chosen one'. Thank You Amazon for making this book available to us.
