UPDATE I recently found what may be the problem and how to repair it. The contacts at the top and bottom where the battery contacts inside the switch get contaminated or corroded. Clean them by scraping with the tip of a screwdriver and some alcohol or contact cleaner. I do not know if they all have this problem but I just fixed one. These fail about every 2 years. The price for this Fire Magic OEM unit is between $50 and $78. After I ordered this I searched the internet using the label pasted on the side of the old one. I found they are commonly used on many other grills. If you buy it directly from the supplier (without the FIRE MAGIC box) they are $16. Exactly the same device but they come without the battery. I have never had one last long enough to drain the battery. Fire Magic grills are very high end but the Spark Generator is just a cheap POS. Amazon shipping is faster but for $16 I ordered it to stock.
