Great Product, let me clarify some of the problems you may be having.
When used correctly, this water silo can be the best thing you ever put in your babies cage. I went through all 127 of the reviews of this product, and after purchasing two for my two cockatiels (Sting and Rogue) I chuckled at the problems that some were having. There is already a wonderful review that is at the top of the most helpful with pictures describing issues you may be having and what you are doing wrong, and I also recommend finding that review, as that was the reason why I decided to give this product a shot 1st off. This silo should only be used on VERTICAL bars. yes you can jerry-rig it to work with horizontal bars, but you WILL NOT be able to remove the trough along with the silo, which is why people removing only the silo are getting water all over their house. The plastic stop valve was not designed to immediately stop water flow when removed from the trough, but to fill the trough with water. If you put this silo on vertical bars (my cage has 3/4th spacing and is nearly at the max width this product will work with, as it nearly snaps on to the bars before you screw it down) then you are easily able to remove the trough along with the silo, allowing you to easily dump the old water in your sink by flipping the silo, then taking off the upside down trough, then emptying the silo. It is so much easier than the step-by-step makes it sound, but some people don't seeem to have figured out the product yet so I felt I had to do this by the numbers. 2nd. filling this product couldn't be easier. after you have removed the trough, hold the silo upside down so the stop valve is hanging and there is an opening for water to flow through. I personally use my filtered fridge water to give cold, fresh water to my tiels. Once the silo is nearly full. remove it from the fridge, then RE-ATTACH the trough while it is UPSIDE DOWN. these other users who are trying to flip it into the trough and spilling water everywhere are missing a simple but important step to keep this whole process cleaner. 3rd and probably most importantly. Give you birds some time to figure this out... I got my birds about 1 week after their parents stopped feeding them, and they had just figured out how water bowls and food bowls work. It took them nearly 2 days to figure out how to find their Seed Corral (another great product) and it was on the 4th day where I finally witnessed the bird drinking from the trough. During this time I put a small bowl of seeds and a bowl of water at the bottom of their cage away from their normal perching points to avoid droppings, and when they got hungry they'd start seeking out food. Natural cockatiel instinct drove them to the floor of their cage to forage, but after exploring their new home for a few days they found access to all their other resources. Just remove the helper sustenance as you witness them finding their other sources of food and water. In summation, I hope some of these tips helped with users who wanted to throw this product against the wall. yes it is made of plastic and isn't the most sturdy thing in the world, but what JW advertises they are pretty good about delivering. Hope this helped a few of you out, and happy birding! :)

It holds water well and my cockatiel has no issue with it!
My girl accepts it and gobbles up water to her heart’s content. My only issue is cleaning it. It needs to be thoroughly, regularly cleaned but the sharp angles and disturbances in the surfaces (shallow circles, etc. from manufacturing) make cleaning it, perfectly, quite challenging. I use a tooth brush (with an angled head produced from heating and bending) and a straw cleaner with cotton fibers at the tip and I am able to scrub things quite well, but it would obviously be cool to require simpler cleaning. All in all, I have had no major issues. I’ve had the same one for, at least, a year. I bought a second one to have on hand should her current one break, but the first one’s still working just fine!

The best of the average--good choice
To review this product, you have to compare with the alternatives. I have been using these for a few years now. These are sturdier than what is typically available. They are also easier to use with some spilling but less than with typical waterers. They are more difficult to clean because of the mechanism at the opening. I think that all available feeders and waterers are a little overpriced but these are worth the difference. I have not had to replace these which is certainly not the case with the typical cheap plastic models. The way they attach to the cage is more convenient. I think that someone could make something better but they haven't yet. This is a good choice for your small birds.

Superb!!
Great Product. Easy To Assemble & Fill. My Parakeet Began Drinking Water From It Right Away. First He Explored Water Tube Thinking It Was A Toy. Soon He Started Drinking! Very Happy With Item & Would Highly Recommend.

Promotes bacteria growth, difficult to clean thoroughly
I used to have one of these for my cockatiel, and because it was so hard to clean thoroughly I thought I would never get one again. Stainless steel bowls, or glass water bottles (similar to hamster bottles), are always the best way to go when possible for bird water containers. Recently my parakeet broke his leg, and suddenly I needed a water container that he wasn’t at risk of falling into. I didn’t want to get the water bottles I mentioned above because he had never experienced one before, and being injured and stressed, it wasn’t the time to carefully introduce him to one. This water silo ended up being the best short-term option. It’s a little bit of a pain to remove from the cage, but not too horrible. Really it’s the cleaning that’s the worst. There’s just no way to get thoroughly into all the little cracks and crevices even with a (clean, unused) toothbrush. Plastic water containers are more porous than stainless steel or glass and therefore harbor bacteria and promote bacteria growth more. Also, my parakeet isn’t much of a chewer, but my cockatiel chewed down the spout on hers a bit. I would never put this in a cage for a bird larger than a cockatiel—they might not even be able to get their beaks into it, and their more powerful beaks would make short work of the plastic if they decided to chew on it.

Works amazing, but *slightly* better with vertical bars
I love this! I have vertical bars so it’s easy to remove the trough and tank together without spilling, but with horizontal bars you could only remove the tank part – it would still work fine though. Once the plastic stopper is centered it doesn’t leak so putting it into the trough wouldn’t be a problem, however it might spill a bit as you take it out. Regardless, it is very well designed and works great :) keeps the water clean and my budgie loves it! Definitely one of the better purchases I’ve made for him.

After years of squeezing the other makes of water feeders thought the bars it is great to finally find a product that works .It does not leak once in place due to the design .The only down side is I have a cage with horizontal bars so the item stays fitted until I clean the cage, which is not a problem as the tube just lifts out and when I change the water I soak up the remaining bit of water in the feeding part with a sheet of kitchen roll .I am happy with this product and have bought a second one as a back up .This item comes in a regular size and a tall I have one of each .
