No, the most effective way to destroy an old hard drive is death by fire! If you disassemble the old drive you will find two very powerful magnets inside.

Do you think this could be used to pull wire under a carpeted area?

The other issue about using this product to pull wire, is that the wire is probably either copper or aluminum. A magnet won't help you with wither of those. Using a fish tape (steel) you may help guide the tape with this but probably not "pull" the tape under carpet.
