Yes they are ...I use a thick bath towel to cover all the shiatsu balls. I use chair in bed. Perfectly fine after I sit towel on chair

This plugs into the wall, also the massage balls for the neck protrude and would making driving very uncomfortable, when I use the neck massage at home I also use one of those. travel neck pillows. The back massage is fine, the neck is too much.

I don't know the dimensions off hand, but the pad isn't too thick. The chair pad fits all sizes and the roller positions are adjustable as well.
