Can this grill be used indoors?

This type of small grill is designed for indoor use; Don't listen to the other answers. However you really need to use the proper charcoal (Japanese "binchotan") that doesn't smoke for obvious reasons.

Jelly form alcohol. I’m sure charcoal will work also but might smoke up the room.

Should the coal be put on n the metal basket or directly in with out the basket? There isn’t holes in the bottom of the metal basket for air flow.

Yes, you put the coal into the basket, it does not have holes in the bottom because air flow is not needed in the bottom. Your coal would fall through.
