ARCHETYPAL POLITICS
This is a profound and compelling argument for seeking out the mythic roots of our Greek heritage and moving away from the logical and linear elaborations. This has implications for mental health professionals in understanding and treating illnesses (such as panic disorder) and reintroducing the Great God Pan into our work. A dense and brilliant book by a great student of Carl Jung.

If you like this book
Simply one more phenomenal book by the Jungian genius and Classics scholar, James Hillman. If you like this book, check out his book on Alchemy as well as his, perhaps, best known, "Dreams and the Underworld."

None of the above categories apply. It's a study of archetypal influences, well thought out and written.

This book finds Pan in the latent impulses of yesterday's interpretation of psychology...
Even for an academic treatise this book is a challenge to read. Not that it's bad, just that it relies so heavily on implication and reference that when the author throws in a clever turn of phrase you have to re-read the paragraph to make sure you're not missing a point. Aside from that, this is a fun read. I love the idea of the repressed natural urge, even if it does diverge so heavily from contemporary trends. This book is almost an historical example of a point in the evolution of psychological thought. It relies on interpretive literalism for the abstractions of Jungian archetypes. Repressed urges, Oedipal desires, dream symbolism. This book finds Pan in the latent impulses of yesterday's interpretation of psychology while perhaps missing the strong argument that Pan is more capably embodied in the modern view of the biological or neurological brain and its associated psychology. All in all, this work presents some interesting ideas and a compelling argument that the way perceive our own cosmology may be more than just banal cultural manipulation - that perhaps Pan is really lurking in the the shadows of our mind, horns and all, beckoning for us to join him in revelry and abandon.

This is an early publication of Hillman's but it shows the incredible creativity of his thought, and the eloquence of his language and approach.

Literary writing yet real science–language for our predicament as human beings, candy for our minds.
