Q: What is the effect on blood pressure of nicotinic acid?

My husband, who is 57, has had borderline high blood pressure his entire adult life. This was of particular concern as he is a truck driver. He also suffered from clinical depression. I do not like pharmaceuticals. I prefer a more natural approach. I did a ton of research and found out about niacin from Dr Andrew Saul. I started hubby on niacin several years ago and two things happened; his blood pressure went to 118/77 or there about, and his depression disappeared. This was only after we found the dose that is right for him. He takes 8 - 500mg tablets 3 times a day. Now I know that many people in the medical profession will scream bloody murder about such a high dose and tell everyone that this could be dangerous. I'm no doctor and I cannot tell you what to do. But I can tell you that it works for my husband and he does not take any kind of pharma. I also trust the research done by Doctor Saul. I got niacin for hubby because of the depression. I take niacinamide, 2 - 500 MG tablets a day, and it not only keeps my blood pressure at a perfect level but it has stopped my restless, twitchy legs from keeping me awake because they no longer twitch unless I forget to take my daily dose. I am a big fan of this product and I highly recommend it. But you do have to find the right dose for you and you do have to take it very regularly.

Q: Just bought a bottle and the lab says "new". Did they change the formula? I no longer get the flush and the tablet is 500 Mg.

I agree with you. When my previous bottle ran out and I switched to my recently received "New Formula and Appearance" bottle if Rugby Niacin 500 mg 1000 tablets I ceased feeling the flushing. I don't think I changed, I think this product changed, probably not for the better. I will try doubling the dose to see if that is comparable to the previous product.

Q: Is this extended release?

This is not extended release. Ramp up gradually, however, and you will not have flushing after you get on a regular schedule. I take it twice a day. (Note that you must be 100% compliant, however. If you miss even a single dose, you'll have some flushing the next time you take it.)

Supplement Facts Serving Size 1 Tablet Amount Per Serving % Daily Value Niacin (as nicotinic acid) 500 mg 2500% Other ingredients: Microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate. Directions: Adults only: One tablet daily as a dietary supplement, or as directed by a physician. CAUTION: Niacin may cause a temporary flushing, itching and tingling, feelings of warmth and headache, particularly when beginning, increasing dose, or changing brand of niacin. These effects seldom require discontinuing niacin use. Skin rash, upset stomach and low blood pressure when standing are less common symptoms; if they persist, contact a physician. WARNINGS: Do not use this product if you have a known sensitivity or allergy to niacin. Use only under the advice and supervision of a physician if you: •have heart disease, recurrent chest pain (angina) or recently suffered a heart attack, •are taking high blood pressure or cholesterol lowering drugs (because of possible drug interactions). •have any of the following conditions: gallbladder disease, gout, arterial bleeding, glaucoma, diabetes, impaired liver function, peptic ulcer, or are a pregnant or lactating woman. Free of sugar, sodium, starch, soy, gluten, preservatives, yeast, animal by-products, artificial colors-flavors.
