It's interesting that naturelo is using carrot in this formula. does anyone know why beta carotine is in areds (original) and not in areds-2?

There have been several studies, published in scientific journals which show that daily supplementation of synthetic beta carotene and/or retinyl palmitate has strong correlation with lung cancer development and cardiovascular disease mortality. CARET study was ended early due to these findings. Interested consumers can find these studies by searching for "beta carotene and lung cancer" and "retinyl palmitate and lung cancer". It is important to note that while a significant number of the participants who developed lung cancer during the studies with these supplements were smokers, some were non-smokers and still developed lung cancer. Another thing to note is that correlation is not causation, but where such strong correlation exists, it's better to error on the side of caution and not take synthetic beta carotene and retinyl palmitate supplements if one is a smoker or has genetic predisposition to lung cancer. The AREDS-2 provides a safer alternative.

Question: Why did the supplement formula change?

Our supplement is based on the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS).  In order to reduce the risk of developing advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD), scientists recommend the following amounts of vitamins and minerals:

- 500 mg Vitamin C
- 400 IU Vitamin E
- 50 to 80 mg Zinc 
- 2 mg Copper 
- 10 mg Lutein
- 2 mg Zeaxanthin

Our initial formula contained different amounts of these nutrients. So in order to improve the effectiveness of our supplement, we adjusted our formula to match the above amounts exactly.

We increased Vitamin C from 100 mg to 500 mg
Increased Vitamin E from 15 mg to 268 mg
Increased Zinc from 22 mg to 50 mg

We also had to remove Vitamin A from the formula because synthetic Vitamin A has been linked to lung cancer in former smokers. I am sure you have never smoked, but many of our other customers are former smokers. In order to keep them safe, we decided to remove Vitamin A and instead have Carrot Powder as a source of natural Beta Carotene, which the body converts to Vitamin A.

As a result of this change the cost of our ingredients increased by 10% however, we decided to keep our price to consumers unchanged.

We believe the new formula will be even more effective than the old one because it is backed by extensive scientific research.

Question 3

Why does your formula not match the areds 2 amounts?

Some of our ingredients are higher, such as Lutein and Zeaxanthin. Others are lower. We wanted to go beyond the AREDS 2 formula and offer a more complete supplement. We felt the AREDS formula was a bit limited and could use some extra ingredients with proven eye health benefits.

Question 4

Just received my bottle of eye health. the color of inside ingredients capsule changed from yellow to brown. has anyone else noticed this?

As you know we source from organic fruits and veggies and the color can change depending on the crop and season.  Our newest batches are more of a yellow color, the older batches were more of a brown.  Know that batches are tested for purity and a fluctuation in color is normal.
