Are 6505a the large size? my dentist recommends large and i can only buy small or medium in the store.

These are large. We just finished our smaller size ... and LOVE these. After 6 months of the smaller sized ... the hygenist raved about the improvement. The larger size doesn't bend as easily, and makes them much easier to use.

I want to stuff these in 12 family stockings at Christmas. How are they packaged so I can divide them?

Are these better than floss

I don't know that they are better. If you floss properly, you get into the curve where the tooth meets the gum, not just between the teeth. However, these are a good substitute when you are on the go or if like me you floss twice a day and want a quick method once a day.

They are better than floss for removing food debris from between teeth at the gum level. They have soft, flexible tiny brush-like projections at the tip that are effective in scrubbing away junk by the gums. They are too fat to get between the teeth themselves unless you have wider gaps between your teeth. They cannot get out something stuck between your teeth. I use both these and floss.
