Bash Pocket Reference: Help for Power Users and Sys Admins

I like this one a lot. Good when you need to look up something quick and don’t want to read all day. It’s also not huge, easy to carry around, softcover.

You cannot beat this book for the money. But actually, you cannot beat it at all. Although essentially the same content is freely available in the Bash 'man' page on Linux, I find the organization and presentation in this 'pocket reference' much more approachable. Not to mention the significant convenience of having it printed and bound for you in a size that literally fits in your pocket, if you choose to keep it there. I am the proud owner of the previous edition, as well, and I am not quite sure what has changed between the two editions. But no matter; anyone who uses Bash, whether interactively or scripted -- (except perhaps the most casual, infrequent users) -- will want to own this book and keep it available at arms length.

Good and handy, but it might have more small examples and perhaps a few words about what to avoid in various situations.

I'm no bash script expert, but with this guide, I can hold my own reading or writing the occasional bash script. No need to read through pages of a bash book's tutorial (though there's nothing wrong with that), this reference cuts to the chase, and gets you on your way quickly.I have more than one copy of this book, and leave on near the various terminals I use. I finally got the kindle version so I'm never without it now.

This is a very handy reference. I used to do a lot of KSH programming back in the day, and in the last couple of years I've had to re-learn my skills, but with BASH instead. I was constantly looking up the same stuff over and over again (e.g. [ ] vs. ( ) vs.   ) -- thank god for Google. Now with this handy pocket reference, I'm still looking up the same things over and over again, but now I have them instantly accessible with a stickie book mark. I liked the book so much, in fact, that I bought a second copy for the home office.

Excellent reference book to keep in your back pocket. I write bash scripts almost on a daily basis, and I've found myself referring to this book several times to look up syntax and better ways of doing things. For the $10, you can't go wrong. While we can always google things, it's always nice to have something else you can look to. I've got two copies of this. One at home and another at the office. I recommend this for anyone who writes bash scripts, newbies and experts.

I have been looking for a simple Bash command reference book and this is just the ticket. It has an alphabetized list of Bash commands for easy reference with details similar to those found in Linux OS man files and info files, rather than a tutorial approach.Brace expansion and other Bash features are discussed with simple examples. It is a good reference book for folks writing Bash scripts who just want to look up commands and syntax.

Good book but you have to be an advanced bash user to use the book but by that time you probably don't need the book.

Bought this as a present for my computer smart nephew who is doing a programming course at college. He had put it on his wish list as it looked good and when he received it he seemed more than happy and says it will help with understanding his course work

Eccellente ed esaustivo reference della bash, da tenere a portata di mano sulla scrivania o di ebook reader. Chiaro, ben strutturato, efficace.

Está claro que leer las páginas de "man" te va a dar mucha de la información que aquí aparece, pero viene con ejemplos y pequeños matices en todo lo que explica que no aparecen en el "man", por lo cual es muy de agradecer.

Libro ideal para iniciadores y para profesionales, una guía rápida siempre es buena y se agradece para programar en Shell.

コマンドはせいぜいビルトインコマンドまでしか載っていないし、ご丁寧に予約後のdoとかdone、esacまでビルトインコマンドと同列に一つ一つ取り上げて載せてやっと全ページ数が148頁。中身が薄いです。(156頁というのは余った白紙頁とアドを加えたページ数です。)
