Will this check for maxiumum overall length of cartridge? will a cartridge bottom out if it is too long?

There is a tiny rim inside each hole at the proper depth that will stop a case from seating if it is too long, but is will not check overall length of a loaded case.

Does this check only loaded ammo

Actually since it is only checking whether the case body and neck are properly sized/positioned I don't see why not. I just tried and a deprimed and sized .223 casing dropped in flush with the top surface and came out easily, while unsized brass stopped about 1/8" out (it could be forced in but had to be poked out with a hex wrench.) Note that this gauge ONLY checks whether the round will chamber, it does not check for overall length.

If I have some 44 mag and 44 S&W will it help to tell the difference? or 10mm and 40 S&W. Both have the diam, but different depths. thanks

No it does not, I have both and it will tell you what its bored for. Brass is mark on back of rim to know which brass is which. 40\10mm are same CIA. But major length diff. 44 mag and 44swor special are closer....
