This Portable Security Door Lock is a handy, peace-of-mind granting little do-dad. It is a two-piece mechanical locking device that is connected together with a little piece of chain. The installation is easy, after you finally figure out how the thing works, but it does take a little dexterity to put the parts in the door jam correctly. I've used this device in several hotels and found it to be useful, but not always a viable option, depending on the hotel door's locking mechanisms.All that said, I think it has a limited use-case scenario: hotels with suites accessed from within the climate-controlled hallways. I stayed a hotel where someone attempted to enter my room with this device in place and I noticed the flat metal piece that is the backbone of this security device deflecting as the person tried to gain entry. I've used the under-the-knob security bar under similar circumstances and never noted any issues with it. In fact, I have seen a hotel door flex in the jam before I saw the under-the-knob security bar show any signs of failure.In conclusion, if you are in a nicer hotel, then this Portable Door Lock is an adequate security measure for your home away from home. If you are in an area where somebody can build up momentum to kick in your door, then stay away from this device. It's sturdy, but too flexible for this kind of abuse.

My son is autistic, non-verval, and elopes from safe spaces. I have spent years not being able to travel with him because he's outgrown baby locks that might be handy and not damaging for use in a hotel but I can't go to sleep because he's likely to just leave by himself while I'm sleeping. Special needs parents know that that's the nightmare that really keeps us up at night. Suddenly I had an idea that maybe I can use this lock on a hotel door as instructed but add a small zip tie between the smallest hole in the silver plate and the handle of the red wedge. This weekend we went on a family trip and stayed in a hotel. I brought a little kit with this lock, a few small zip ties, and scissors to snip the zip tie to remove. It worked like a charm. I set it up the way I described and tried my best to open the door from the inside like he might. I couldn't do it. I actually slept and my son slept and had a great time. Seeing him be safe and still included in what everyone else is doing made me want to cry. It just really meant a lot to me. If you have eloper in your life, you should have one of these around for travel/and or emergencies like staying with a relative unexpectedly during a home emergency. It's a pretty affordable peace of mind.

This works fine at my house and on my office door. But hasn't worked on my last 8 hotel stays.I purchased this for hotel rooms and so far it hasn't worked on any brands (Hilton, Marriott, and Holliday Inn) I visited.
