Excellent alternative to silicone, but not a replacement.
Here we have the quintessential old-school gasket "helper" sealant. No tool box should be without it. This sealant is NOT silicone based, which can be a great thing or a bad thing. The good thing is that it doesn't harden and peel off smooth surfaces like silicone, and it doesn't stick things together like glue like silicone. Be sure you're using it for it's intended purpose. For me, I use it to lightly coat paper gaskets used with oil or water. Just a smidgen on a gasket goes a LONG way. If the sealing surfaces are extremely flat and true to each other, this will work great as well, even without a gasket. If there are surface irregularities, silicone might be a better plan. Just like silicone, this gasket maker can cause gaskets to "squirt out" when tightened, but my experience is that it does not do so as badly as silicone since it's less of a lubricant in it's "wet" state. The good thing is that if you let the Permatex #2 "set up" for an hour or so, before installing the gasket, it does much better to help increase the seal, whereas silicone simply turns to a solid mass and doesn't add to making the gasket seal better. Wear some gloves if you don't want this stuff to get all over your hands; it doesn't easily come off with soap and water, but acetone will remove it in short order. Perhaps the best thing about this stuff is that unlike silicone, it is far less likely to turn to a solid mass in the tube before you have a chance to use it again.

This is GOOD Stuff - PERIOD
I have used gallons and gallons of this stuff over the years; I would not be without it.I was using it way back when it was Mr. Gasket.I never do any tedious gasket scraping; that went out with Model T Fords.I pull the two parts apart and try my best to keep the gasket intact; but, I don't lose sleep over it if the gasket separates, tears, breaks, or leaves a lot of itself on both surfaces.I just slather on a generous coating of this stuff and put things back together with whatever old gasket was on there to begin with.I have never had a leak.If I am dealing with new clean stuff with new gaskets, I slather both sides of the new gasket with this stuff; and, years later, when I take the thing apart, the gasket comes loose clean and in perfect reusable condition --- not all cooked on and stuck.

Permatex 80016 Form-A-Gasket #2 Sealant, 3 oz.
I ordered this Permatex 80016 Form-A-Gasket #2 Sealant, 3 oz. for a project restore a Beckman vacuum setup with a Thomas dedicated vacuum pump. It at first would not even hold a vacuum when running, but after just looking it over, running, sealing leaks and checkout of the diaphragm it is better and goes to 10" HG. This permatex form a gasket is for the seal around the flapper and diaphragm of the pump and with that I will expect it to work even better. I have used Permatex or years working pumps in the gas plant I worked in and it performs well when putting a pump or another mechanical device together to seal air leaks, oil leaks and generally put a good tight assembly up where needed. I know where and where not to use it and it is a good product. Many grades of use to choose from and this 80016 is a good general sealant and stays soft and pliable. I like it. This is a good amount to buy and keep some around for later.
