We live in northern california and have a big issue with acorn woodpeckers. anyone used it for this particular species and how did it work?

In Sonoma where I live this unit works and works very well. I don't know what species we have but they were boring holes into my house. This unit did the trick. Birds have not returned and its been 3 months. Very pleased with the results.

Mine was designed for woodpeckers -think theirs like 10 settings for sound effects -some work better than others depends on your area . My suggestion is to contact the company and tell them of your unique situation . Ive had mine for quite a while and its does work- scares the crap out of my local woodpeckers.

In the process of scaring woodpeckers, will it also scare away cardinals & chickadees that I feed?

I can't answer this question accurately because I turned on all sounds to deter Woodpeckers. In theory, if you played the woodpecker in distress sounds it would only effect them. I drove all the birds away but will try woodpecker only sounds when I not in emergency mode next year. I can tell you the sounds work and keep all birds away with settings I am using.

How does it work on pigeons?

I purchased the "Bird-X BXP-PRO WP Woodpecker Pro Electronic Bird Repeller" for a woodpecker problem and it was not effective. I had also tried the baloons ("Bird B Gone MMSED5 Scare Eye Diverter, Set of 5") and mylar tape ("Bird-X TAPE-25 Irri-Tape Bird Repellent Ribbon" and "Bird-X Irri-Tape Bird Repellent Ribbon 100-Foot Kit") and they were not effective. What did work is the "Bird B Gone Bird Chase Super Sonic MMIB50", it was very effective for woodpeckers; however, it did not hold up to the weather very well. I have had to purchase sveral replacements, about one per year. The MMIB50 also has a setting for pigeons, not sure how effective that may be.
