FIVE STAR WEDGE!
I hand split my wood and I purchased this wedge after wearing out another that I had for six years. I like this wedge as it is .5 pounds more than the competition and it seems to have a sharper tip. I use a 4 pound maul with it and I am able to split a 24" wide tree cut in 18" lengths in about three hours. The tip makes it so easy to tap into the wood. It looks as if it splits four ways ,but I have never had that kind of luck. It splits faster and wider than a standard wedge. I have been using this type of wedge for about 10 years and I won't go back to the old split wedge. If you are splitting hickory or a harder wood caution is needed as sometime the wedge will pop out and rocket into the air. One other thing about these wedges, is that they are very easy to lose. If you have an can of fluorescent paint, it would be advisable to spray the wedge intermittently or you may be spending half of your time looking for it. I have to give this a five star because it is easily stored and so inexpensive and doesn't need to be put on a hard surface like a floor splitter. I am not into moving ricks here and there. just to accommodate an hydraulic splitter..just doing the job on the spot and throwing the split wood into my truck to haul off straight from the tree.

Best splitting wedge I've used
I needed to split chunks from a large Scarlet Oak but after attacking it with an 8lb maul, then a 15lb monster maul I was ready to rent a splitter. I've split lots of wood but wasn't getting anything but sore elbows with this tree. Usually red oak is easy to split, but this one had super gnarly grain and knots everywhere. You can see from the pictures that this wood is at the limits of hand splitting. The largest chunk pictured was 18" diameter and 19" long with knots and grain. In one picture, you can see the mark where I had already hit a solid whack with an 8lb maul...with no luck. I think the worst chunk took 3-4 solid whacks using the wedge. This wedge is the perfect shape to bite into the wood but wide, so it doesn't get buried...maybe it would bury in soft wood like fir or spruce but I only split hardwood so I wouldn't know. This wedge is a life saver, since I wasn't going to waste any more time with the mauls; and couldn't get an 800lb splitter to the wood without making a road for my truck to pull it there.

It will not get into the wood...if it does then tries to kick back half way in
Not had a good experience with this at all. It will not go into the wood and tried to jump backout. Tip seems soft and tend to bend. While regular wedges with a straight edge work well in on the same type of wood.

Did not meet expectations
I rarely write reviews but this product is not worth the money. Tried this on a bunch of fresh white oak and after numerous tries reverted to old tried and true maul and 2 standard wedges. Wood was fresh and had no cracks. This item just pops back out every time. Even after getting some cracks started with the maul it did not work.Standard wedges did. Also the tip started to bend even after a couple of uses on this wood. I think the metal ischeap. I am not a metallurgists just my impression. Perhaps those that write good reviews have never used abasic/standard wedge. One person says to dry the wood first. My neighbor says that this kind of wood splits best before it dries. Again no expert just saying what he told me and I was amazed that it did split as he said it would. And if the wedge is so good why would you have to leave wood out to dry rather than get it done? Hope this helps.
