Daverat's Wife Speaking: We began using this when our house was sold and we moved into a Condo, having to share a laundry room with people who toss smelly workout clothes into the washers without a thought for the people who use the washer next. We'd put our clothes in dirty but not bad-smelling and they'd come out dirtier and smelly! I tried using washing machine cleaners before doing my laundry, but nothing worked. A nurse friend recommended this brand, and I will never go back to Tide! It does the job! No more stinky clothes from other people's armpits or ball sweat! The clothes come out CLEAN and with NO ODOR. I use the liquid, which is very concentrated. I do have sensitive skin and Defunkify has never irritated my skin in any way. I used to add scent beads to try and cover up the odors of biological deposits left on my clothes from using a communal washing machine but now, it is no longer necessary. I do still pay to run a load with a washing machine cleaner a couple times a month because we have people that use far too much detergent, scent beads and other crap and it builds up, but in general, if it is a single home washer, Defunkify is all you will ever need. I have washed my own workout clothing or very sweaty clothing and this stuff really is good at breaking down what is called Biofilm, the dead skin, and body secretions that are particularly stinky. Also, being a married couple, this is very good for bedding, if you catch my meaning. I would suggest that if you NEED a scent on your clothing, use a scented dryer sheet instead of s scented laundry detergent and use Defunkify on all your loads. Some of my neighbors who frequently wash their clothes right after I do, have told me that even THEIR clothes smell better now, so Defunkify is doing exactly what it claims to do: get rid of Biofilms and dirt that would normally redeposit on your laundry AND preventing the buildup of Biofilm in the machine itself. The clothes have NO smell at all and stay fresh for months in my closet if stored properly next to other clean clothing. If you stick some musty item next to your clen clothes, those clothes will smell musty too. Therefore, you may want to do what I did, and slowly cycle all your clothing thru a wash with Defunkify! I cannot recommend this more highly! Defunkify has also turned out to be a great value for the price. It is easy to measure and load for load, far cheaper than Tide Pods or other detergent Pods. I do use dryer sheets of a different brand with no scent for softening and static control. Defunkify replaces detergent Pod, scent beads, liquid fabric softener and Lysol Laundry Sanitizer, all expensive products. You need to factor that into the value of this excellent detergent!

Love this so much! We stored items at a house with a musty smell and I could not wash it out of my bed linens. Tried everything including scent boosters, even though I don’t really like strongly scented laundry, and you could still smell the mustiness under the heavy perfume smell. Defunkify took out the musty smell and had almost no scent. The sheets just smell clean. I had no problem with fading. To test it, I washed the top sheet and pillowcases with Defunkify and then compared the color to the unwashed bottom sheet and there was no fading. In case it matters the sheets were 100% cotton and I can’t vouch for no fading on every fabric. I followed the instructions exactly and used the specified amount for my load size. I thought I was going to have to buy all new bedding but Defunkify saved them, which saved me so much money. If you have funky fabrics, I highly recommend this.

This product is amazing and totally meets up to all the five star reviews. NOTHING was helping my husbands sweaty, stinky work clothes, even straight enzyme soaks or oxy boosts. We only use products with clean ingredients, and my usual Molly Suds detergent works great on our other clothes (or so I thought), but not his. I decided to give this a try even though it seemed a but pricey after reading the reviews and hoping they were accurate. Well, they are spot on. This stuff totally deodorized his clothes and leaves them clean. I use it half and half with my scented Mollys on my other clothes and even THEY are smelling better- they actually smell like the scent in the Mollys, where they didn't before. I didn't realize my gym clothes were a little funky and not getting as clean as they could be until I started using this. That funky, musty smell that happens in the washing machine is totally gone, too! Some reviews mentioned this, and it is true!! It has been great on our sensitive skinned family members and has caused NO irritation or rashes. It is a superior cold water wash, too. I find it cleans and deodorizes better if the temperature is medium or less. If you make your water too hot, enzymes stop working as well. I have never has a cold wash come out this clean and fresh. I will probably go through this faster than I would like to, but the price is well worth having clean smelling laundry without toxic or harsh ingredients. I am pleased using it full strength on the tough jobs and 50/50 with Mollys on our everyday laundry, and I skip it on light and delicate loads- just to help make it last longer.

My husband is a landscaper. Needless to say, he generates a lot of dirty smelly clothes. I really only had to use a small amount for great results. Product was viscous and concentrated. Defunkify worked wonders not only in the dirt but all our clothes came out smelling great until …. Last two orders each bottle of my two bottle set was mostly water. Not viscous like the first several orders. Must have changed their formula or have had a manufacturing change or goof up. Sent a message to the seller each time w no response. So can no longer recommend. So sad. Have switched to a blueland detergent tablet for most laundry now.

They significantly changed their formula, old version is the one with the smaller blue rectangle. I’m allergic to SLS, and this didn’t contain SLS before, but it does now. It cleans better, but I’m itchy where my clothes are snug, like waistbands. It also smells different - I buy the unscented, but I had to double check that I received the correct product because it smells… not exactly fragranced, but soapy in a way it didn’t before. I guess it’s time to look for a new detergent, although no one else in my house has said anything, so maybe I’ll keep buying it for my teenaged sons to use since it really does get their clothes clean.

We had some synthetic blend clothes and workout clothes that just held on to stench no matter what we did. This was finally the thing that was able to get the smell out.

Works great and seems to leave less residue. I was looking for a safer option with less body-altering chemicals.

I have used their soap for a few years and just love their products. It’s true they changed their formula and I did contact the company. Here’s the reply I got in February 2025 for those wondering. “We want you to know that we’ve listened carefully. Our team went back to the drawing board and made adjustments to address these concerns. The next production run will have a thicker consistency and a more neutral scent for our Free & Clear formula—all while keeping the same great performance, sustainability, and safety you’ve come to trust. As of last week, all our Lavender has been updated to the thicker consistency, and we have recently sent in a new batch of thicker formula to our shipping department for our Fresh Air. We will be updating the Free and Clear in our next production as well.”
