Easy to use
My dog was newly diagnosed with diabetes. He has to do glucose curves weekly that requires him to go to the vet and they test him every two hours over the course of 8 hours. It’s costly and causes him stress. My veterinarian suggested I get this tester. It came within 4 days- as expected. The cost of this device is the cost of 1 glucose curve- so it’s worth it. Just a hint- it’s best to prick the dogs lip-as they bleed really easy there as opposed to the ear which takes a lot more effort to get it to bleed. Don’t use the pen that pushes the lancet. Touching the lancet to their lip really softly does the trick. Just turn on your device and you have two minutes to collect your sample. It’s easiest to test your pet with two people first until you get your moves down. One person holds and pricks the lip while the other uses the device to collect the samples. It will be nerve racking at first- but it does get easier. Set up of your device- watch a YouTube video. Reading the directions was tough. I recommend reading the directions first- then watching YouTube. I also watched a YouTube on how to perform the test. I watched a couple of them and picked the technique I felt worked best for me. The first two times I tested my dog I think I went through 4 test strips because I kept getting an error message. The more patient you are and the more you work with it the easier it becomes. Work with your vet, because the reading can be pretty scary. My first curve started at over 750, went down to 265 and back up to 456. In humans- that would be bad- but for dogs- my vet said that was normal until we get the dosage right. Like I said- he was diagnosed three weeks ago and we need to do a glucose curve weekly until we get him stabilized. This device is easy to read and use with patience and practice. Stick with it and don’t be alarmed if you go through several test strips until you get your moves down.

Great help for having to test at home
We have a recently diagnosed diabetic older cat. We were introduced to the concept of doing the at-home glucose blood test when we had to take our cat to the vet for a glucose curve which was an all day stay at the vet. We were concerned for the cat's stress since she hasn't been to the vet since a kitten and hates the car and strangers. And then there's the cost! Our vet and tech highly recommended we do the future testing at home and specifically gave us the AlphaTrak name. I was happy that it cost a lot less than we were anticipating but extremely stressed at having to stab our cat in the ear several times to do our next glucose curve. It was recommended we use a veterinary needle (22g) that was supplied by our vet instead of the lancets for an easier poke. I had a few questions about getting the meter settings correct and the customer service for the product was excellent - very helpful and easy! We received plenty of test strips with the product and didn't have any strips that needed re-doing due to mistakes. We did watch several videos, had a demo by our vet tech and read tons of reviews and recommendations for using the product. We did try the lancet without the lancing device but found the vet needle was easier. We learned a lot about the "poke" over 5 tests for the curve and a couple of tests two weeks later, which is the only difficulty for us. We did use the very edge of the cat's ear on the inside edge near the top. We found basically we had to wait several seconds or a minute to let the blood come forth - didn't appear the instant we poked. It is true it just takes a tiny bit of blood touched to the nub and it works! We did work as a team, one holding the cat and doing the poke and the other using the meter. It did not seemed to hurt the cat, just a little startled and probably our tension didn't help but after a few times it's not as stressful as I anticipated. I am very grateful to get the test done at home where I know the results will be more true since she's in her own environment. Also it's great to have if we're making diet changes etc. and want to do random checking on how she's doing. It's easy to use and good instructions. Good quality product.

A must have for diabetic dog parents
Not sure why this device had bad reviews because this has been a life saver. Our Rottweiler was recently diagnosed with diabetes and although our vet said we didn’t have to get a glucose monitor, we felt like it would give us more peace of mind to know what the numbers were doing. At $50 for the whole kit it’s honestly a STEAL. Easy to set up and easy to use. We have never done any of this stuff before and even newbies like us found it super simple. The only downfall is that the test strips are $50 for 50… talking about expensive. The pricking needles are reasonably priced at least. Buy this for your fur baby!

Can't imagine not having this anymore
This is the second dog I have had in my lifetime that was diagnosed as diabetic. With the first one, years ago, I had no idea that pet meters existed and I'm honestly so happy they do. I have been able to care for my current diabetic dog so much better than I was able to for my first.I, as a human, am not diabetic so am not very vered in the accuracy of the human meters, but in quite satisfied with this one for my dog. Every now and then I will get a reading that seems wrong, and I just test again and get a number that was much more in line with my expectations.I also purchased a human meter to use when money was a little tighter (the strips are pretty expensive for this), and this meter is much more accurate and consistent than the human meter. The consistency is what I think is important, and use less strips with the pet meter than checking and rechecking with the human one.I also own the competing brand to this one and while I love the durability and large screen of the other one, the Alpha Trak brand seemed to be more accurate and is the same one my vet uses so we get the same readings which helps with overall care in my opinion. Also, that is not to say this one is not durable. I have dropped it a good number or times and it's still working fine.I honestly can't even fathom how I had a diabetic dog without having access to a glucometer. I would never give it up now, it is definitely allowing me to care for my dog on a level I couldn't before.
