Good but should've been shorter
The plot of the book is that the world is going to end on Christmas Day. Christopher Reese, our *7* year old mc, get an imaginary friend - a Mr. Nice Man (from a parallel Imaginary World), who asks Christopher to build a Tree House, to help stop the wicked 'Hissing Lady' from breaking the glass between the Imaginary World and the Real World.Let's start with the positives:- The writing was very promising - it was simple, unearthly, with a dash of creepy - it kept me hooked from page one.- The relationships between all the characters - especially Christopher and his Mom was just so strong; I feel like that is Chbosky's signature writing element, something he had shown us he is a master at in The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, and I felt like he delivered on that again: establishing a deep sense of relationship between characters even if we only see a few lines of it on the page.- I loved the parallel he drew with his story and our real-life - how the people in the imaginary world messing around us is what makes us behave and react in certain ways, as a consequence. It made sense of how and why sometimes we get irrationally angry and do things that we wouldn't usually do - because someone from the Imaginary World was sort of toying with us and our emotions. That was a cool concept. But my love for this book stops there because what was the rest of the book and WHY? Even the things that I said I loved got real annoying real fast after the halfway point because themes started repeating throughout this 700-page book.- First of all, this kid is 7 years old, but he could have been a little bit older because a 7-year-old just does not make sense for this story.- Secondly, the whole flu narrative - everyone in the book gets the flu - that's kind of how the hissing lady takes control of people. Even Christopher has the flu, so IMAGINE a 7-year-old with a 104-degree fever ALL THE TIME, yet you think the kid can just splash cold water on himself, pretend he's not sick and continues to saves the world? Nope.- And lastly, this book could've just ended halfway through. The entire plot was working towards the world ending on Christmas day and the prophecied day comes at around the 400~ page mark. The second half brought on a plot twist that drastically changes things and we see the entirety of the Christmas day unraveling in the final 300 pages of the book. They were connected, sequential series of events, except they were just totally different from how we started with the first part, so I was left confused and slightly annoyed. The rest of the book became this whole one-day in-detail event of people just running around and there were biblical allegories - biblical parallels and it all became too much.I was so tired of just listening to people getting the flu and Christopher thinking 'baby teeth' or the other, and this book was just too much rambling and not enough payoff at the end.I enjoyed the writing in the beginning and I did think that the elements that I mentioned earlier were well done. But then it takes on a very weird tone at multiple points and the whole biblical allegory thing was just annoying. So it was only a 3/5 star read for me.Thanks to Hachette India for providing me with a review copy of this book!if you want to hear a more rambly but mostly similar version of this review, check out my January Wrap Up video on my Booktube [ZanyAnomaly]

Was expecting a much better narrative .
I'd read/heard so many people rave about this book and the synopsis sounded pretty interesting too, so I picked this up .However, I really didn't like it. I can't put my finger on what it is exactly, but I just didn't get sucked into the story at all. I didn't feel involved with any of the characters.albeit , the brisk velocity of chbosky's writing kept me engaged till the end. the plot was borderline ridiculous. Not to mention all the prattle on about conflict between good vs evil was incredibly depressing. So,the majority of the book is just plain bleak & repetitive. Also, I felt like the author was trying to subtly weave wisdom and life lessons into the story, but it was put on so thick, it was incredibly annoying and sometimes felt almost like an insult to my intelligence.

This book was amazing. It started off slow and I almost gave up on it. But the twists kept me going. I loved every single page!

Great!
A really interesting read, long but enjoyable. I'm not religious in the least but I enjoyed the "God" aspect of it. Would really make for a great HBO or Netflix series, especially is Chbosky directed it. Definitely recommend.

Worth reading to the end
First off, I would like to say that it has taken me 6 weeks to read this book. I would advise treating it like a meal with many small courses. Savour every last word but in short amounts of time (to avoid frustration). I enjoyed this book. The writing really is wonderful. The imagery is fantastic and leaves no unanswered questions ( I get frustrated with authors that leave things to the imagination. This is ironic considering the fact that I love reading and have done from a young age.) that I could find. This is definitly heavily Chrstian fiction. For myself, I can't stand being preached at, however it took me a while to realise what the book is actually about. This being said, the message does not detract from the fantastic story and something always pulled me back to it. I would advise not spending too much money on it. I managed to buy it for £2.99 and it was a birthday present so I can live with that.). I'm not sure at what point I realised the story was about how we all (mostly) create our own Hell but I do know that I was enjoying the supernatural side of it all so much that I wanted to read to the end.So try to ignore the reviews that give this 1 star and give the writer a chance. It's rambling and yes, could have been written with maybe 3/4 of the words but I think that it would have lost some of the magic if the writer had cut chapters.
