Like with anything you want to teach your puppy you have to start young! I also ask you ready the entire review as I did tremendous amount of research before purchasing this product and I believe I have solutions to many of the problems people have had in their reviews. I acquired a purebred chocolate lab when she was 8 weeks old. Initially all I had was some generic puppy pads that I had purchased from a local grocery store. I gated her in a small space while I was away (not in a crate) and she was using these for pee and poop. However the pads were a pain to continually clean up and after one or two pee's she was disinterested in using them and would have accidents. At about 10 weeks I had purchased the Tinkle Turf and received it the next day along with the Simple Solution X-LARGE PADS. The idea was that I would use the pads underneath the Tinkle Turk. I tried this combination in the small space while I was gone and it was next to the door when I was at home and while I was asleep there was just a pad next to the bedroom door. This worked beautifully! Eventually I rewarded her for using the Tinkle Turf with more space she could roam within the house. Eventually the Tinkle Turf stays next to the back door to the yard and she has had zero accidents and has free reign to the house. In face when I'm home I keep the back door open (do not have a doggy door) and when she has to go she finds the Tinkle Turf, notices the door is open and just goes outside! I believe the success of this product was small steps and the Simple Solution Training Pads. The two major problems (and one minor one) I've read is getting the dog to use the Tinkle Turf as well as the smell/cleanliness of the Tinkle Turf itself as well as a flimsy plastic tray. The easiest way to combat both of these problems is the Simple Solution X-Large Pads. When ordering these pads keep in mind they are mad to fit the Tinkle Turk. Don't let this discourage you because when you place the pad in the middle of the Tinkle Turf the pad absorbs all pee from your dog. Additionally the pad also has an attractant that will help aid your dog in using the Tinkle Turf. I suggest that you start our forcing your dog to be in a small space with the Tinkle Turf however not to small (I put mine in the kitchen and allowed my pups to use the hallway has her play area. Then slowly let the area grow. Now, I had nay sayers claiming she wouldn't use it when I moved it to the back door. But dogs are smarter then we give them credit for. All you have to do is show them where its at, their noses will do the rest (that's where the attractant comes in). Then reward your dog with more access to the house and test if they are able to seek out and use the Tinkle Turf. The second problem is the smell. I change the pad once a day (when I get home for the day) at that time (every other day) I will rinse off the Tinkle Turf. I have a hose in the back yard so I spray it down and let it dry in the Arizona Sunshine however simply hanging it up will just be fine. When you rinse it off you will see that the syntheic grass it self won't retain any liquid. Its the plastic underneath of the Tinkle Turf and the plastic tray that will retain smell. However if you have the Training Pads it not only makes clean up extreamly easy it also prevents any smell that people are worried about. The third and minor problem is people say the plastic tray breaks easily. I have a lab puppy and she runs and jumps on it, chews on it. Not to mention I initially transferred it everyday from my kitchen to the back door. I don't know what they are doing but I have not had a problem with it.To sum everything up, I love it. If you train your dog right with it and clean it by a simple rinse (no chemicals) plus the puppy pads. You'll be just fine! My puppy is 4 months old, only uses when she absolutely needs it and we haven't had any accidents. Its made puppy potty training so easy and no headaches! In my next installment I have a 3 month old Italian Greyhound entering the household and I will be attempting to litter box train him as well as the Tinkle Turf. Look for that review in the next month or so. I hope I've helped you make your decision on purchasing this fantastic item.

The Prevue Pet Tinkle Turf amazingly has grass that looks 90% real. How to train your dog to use it:- If you have a dog you usually walk so they can take care of their needs, then you need to put their collar and leash on, and "walk" them into the grass. It takes patience; and it works better if you verbally tell them to "go potty" when they're doing it outside and repeat it when you have them standing on the grass.- If you use puppy pads, then you need to start by putting the pad on the Tinkle Turf and encouraging your dog to use it.- If you haven't potty trained your fur baby yet, start by taking them to the Turf every 30 minutes and RIGHT AFTER they eat. Most dogs will empty their bladder after they drink substantial water, too. Tell them often to "go potty" and make it a positive experience - TREAT them as they use it/after they use it. Say "YES" or "GOOD JOB" when they do their business on it and pet them. NEVER punish them for doing it somewhere else, it's a process and they learn as long as you consistently reward them and take them there. Keep the Turf in one place that's easily accessible. I have never found an attractant spray that works for all dogs, but patience and loving always does.Tips:- I've found that potty training goes a lot better if you start small. Ie, start with one part of the room gated off, and keep food, water, toys and the Turf there along with a doggie bed. Monitor your dog and make sure the place isn't so large that they could wander: they should only really have room to either be in the bed or on the Turf. Most dogs don't go where they sleep, so they will automatically go on the grass. Treat them when they do.- Some dogs think the Turf is a place to sleep. Make their actual dog bed very enticing (I hide treats as occasional surprises or put some nice toy there. I also keep their bed near sunlight, where bigger dogs especially like to bask).- Soak the Turf pad in vinegar and water overnight. It really helps with the smell.- Buy a potty pad that comes with a drawer, like the Pet Zoom one. This one is hard to clean and smells extra bad because you don't have all the urine draining out to one drawer that can easily be emptied.Pros:If you can get your puppy/dog to do their business on it, it saves a TON of money on puppy pads or litter.Looks realistic.Cons:The smell is horrible unless you're rinsing it several times a day.The initial cost (with the replacement turfs) is high. Some dogs think it's a bed and require further training. It leaks if there's too much urine (which happens quickly with big dogs, especially if you have more than one).Bottom line: Buy this if you want something cheaper. Otherwise, buy one with a drawer. Be patient, this isn't something your dogs will learn quickly if they're used to other methods of going potty. Buy an extra pad so you can use it while one is being cleaned/dried. Air dry in sunlight. Don't use bleach. Happy potty training.
