Is the depth, surface where you actually place food to be steamed, of the basket really 3 inches?

It’s not. I just measured and it’s 1.5” deep. The lid will give some height, maybe another inch, but these are super shallow. Won’t be good if you want to steam bbq pork buns or any fluffy buns for that matter.

Where to buy wax paper liners

In China, people usually use vegetable leaves as liners. Napa cabbage is very popular. In some places they use lotus leaves. Recently, my mom has been using leaves from the fig tree they have in their backyard, although fig leaves do impart a flavor that not everyone likes. In comparison, Napa cabbage is fairly neutral and completely edible for less waste. Of course, for anything that might be liquidy at any point, use a plate or bowl.
