It worked once I cleaned the lens cleaner!
Here is the update! I bought a blu-ray lens cleaner and used it. It was a nice blu-ray lens cleaner, not expensive. When I was done, I put the same blu-ray disc in that I had been trying before (The Phantom Menace). IT WORKED! So I have changed my rating from two stars to four stars. It works, it was inexpensive, I probably would have had to purchase a cleaner eventually anyway. If it had worked the first time, I would give it five stars.I purchased this last week. I also bought three Blu-ray movies. The blu-rays do not play. I was able to play DVDs just fine, thank you. I get a white screen that tells me that I may need to go to the LG website to look for an firmware upgrade. After I get that screen, the screen goes blank again, and the device will not work at all - I had to unplug it and then plug it back in. I went to the website to look for a firmware update and there was none available. I called tech support and the rep was very pleasant and helpful. She suggested I get a blu ray lens cleaner and see if that works. I also sent an email to customer support - they suggested I try resetting to factory standards. I tried resetting it, but that had little effect, except that after the screen goes white, I am able to eject the disc and turn the device off. I will buy a blu ray lens cleaner today and see if that works. If not, it gets sent back. I'll update this review after I give it a try.

TV and Speakers Flicker While Watching Movies.
There seems to be some sort of connection issue between the player and my TV that causes constant flickering and noise on the TV when watching a blu ray disc. I'm not sure how to describe it, but the while watching 2 different movies, the TV picture flickered every so often and a loud noise was going through the speakers, almost like it had a bad HDMI connection, but I was using a brand new HDMI cable that has worked fine on other devices (btw, it does not come with an HDMI cable either). On the 1st movie, I thought it might be the disc since I did rent it from RedBox. However, the 2nd rental did the same thing, and the blu-ray player continued to have the issue with no disc at all. Sending it back.(EDIT) After playing around with the ports, I did end up getting this device to work. I suspect some interference was causing the issue as I have a cloud server near the side port.

Great player, without the unneeded bells and whistles
This is a great little Blu Ray player, without the unneeded bells and whistles. This doesn't have a view screen on the front of the box, so if that's something you need then you may wish to look elsewhere. It has a compact size which is perfect for our dresser in the bedroom. We have had it for a few months now and have had no problems with it. It's just a great basic player from a brand that we feel we can trust. The only downside is that we were looking for a blu ray player that did not use Cinavia protection, and had read in forums that LG was one of those that didn't We have a few children's movies that we've made a backup copy of (it's legal to make one backup copy of a movie that you have purchased.) and those backups will not play in this blue ray player. That's an ability we'd like to have because we have children that break their movies often and we have to the pull out the backup. Overall still very satisfied regardless of that little nitpickyness.

Does what it does well if you just need a simple player
Very basic DVD/CD/BlueRay player. Doesn't have any of the connected app junk, e.g. Netflix and other apps. I have a dedicated box for those services. This keeps the DVD player remote very simple and uncluttered. This was one of the few I could find. Replaces an old Sony that died 3 years ago. Never thought I'd buy a dedicated player, but my wife still gets DVDs from the library, and we do have a large CD collection. Now that Apple laptops no longer have built-in players, there is actually a need to have a dedicated playing device. So, here we go. Does what it does well with a minimum of fuss and setup. Like the old days,

Excellent and economical player ! Great picture !
I love this blue-Ray player ! I have a pretty new hd led tv, but when I first watched a blue-Ray movie on this player I instantly noticed a big difference ! Plays regular movies also. The price was very good also. I looked at several other blue-ray players at the big box stores and online, but found none that was as economical as this one. I was looking for a basic blue-ray player that played both blue-ray and regular dvd's. This plays cd's also. It's remote control is small, easy to use, and simple. I know this is a basic player, but that's what I wanted. You won't find a better player that has such a great picture, easy to use remote control, plays blue-Ray and regular dvd's and cd's, and that's this economical ! Worth every penny !

Very good, simple, affordable, blu-ray player
I ordered this because it was one of the most affordable blu-ray players available on amazon and manufactured from a solid company. It is no-frills and has no internet connectivity, but that is what I needed. I already have a tv app stick (the C*****cast) and a smart tv to do the smart stuff. The unit has a nice, simplistic, modern design with a single unobtrusive dim led to indicate it is on. The remote has a good design in a compact size. The largest reason I was okay ordering this to begin with despite the few reviews was that I have a similar-looking LG blu-ray player that is about 3 years old that is still running perfectly. The other negative reviews are pretty scrupulous as evident by the unhelpful ratings, so I felt compelled to write this review.

Good for occassional use
The player looks good on the shelf and doesn't have any extra bells and whistles to weigh it down. It is a great option if all you want is to play Bluray and DVDs. It has frozen on me a couple of times which is why I took off a star. I had to unplug it and plug it back in. The remote isn't anything special either. If you don't watch a lot of movies and just need a bare bones option for when you do, this is a great product. If you are a movie buff and plan on using your player a lot, I would look somewhere else.
